The Wailer's Equipment

Post by Soul Revolutionare II »

Does anyone know what type of guitars, amps, pedals, bass, keyboards etc. The Wailers used until their breakup after Burnin'. Also does anyone have any information on their guitar style as far as technique, chords, tabs.

Ites!
I watched a dvd from the original Wailers days and I saw Bob playing a Fender Stratocaster and Peter played a Gibson Les Paul.
Unfortunately, I don`t know the exact models they used.

If you check the Bob Marley Memorial Tribute issue of The Beat magazine - then called The Reggae & African Beat(Collector's Edition, annual) from 1987, I seem to remember seeing something, a clip from a UK paper about their equipment whilst on tour in England in '73.

there is video called something like "The Making of Catch a Fire" - I'm sure if your eyes are good you could find some of the information you're looking for

Marley used a Gibson Les Paul mostly once the original Wailers split up.

And Family Man played a Fender jazz bass.

Bob used an early 70s les paul special
and a silverface fender twin reverb in the catch a fire tour(prob early 70s - they started silverfaces in 68 or so)
This amp was stolen by steve jones of the sex pistols

This stuff is pretty expensive - there are cheaper tube amps you can get - twin reverbs are really loud - but it you want the sound to stay clean at high volume they're good.

family man would have used a tube amp too - all jamaican bass players have sounds that are too warm and well rounded for most solid state amps - especially with a jazz bass - which are harsher and have a less rounded sound than precision basses. If you cant afford a tube amp i'd try out the differences between these basses, cause a jazz bass will sound a lot nastier on a solid state

i've noticed a lot of bass plyers from the seveties used hofner beatle basses

Can anybody tell me what kind of bass robbie shakespeare used in the classic albums: catch a fire dvd? I'm pretty sure he used an early 70s jazz bass with pearloid inlays during the 70s - how long did they make them for?

Gibson re-issued the Bob Marley model a few years ago.
But I think their other models have more features like binding, better woods and more hand crafting works.
Other models have humbuckers which sound warmer than burstbuckers.
