Produced by Lee Perry but dubbed by someone else?

Post by Congo Bunny »

So the game is can you list any tracks that were produced by Lee Perry (Or clearly has had really firmly in the driving seat) recorded at Black Ark with that classic Black Ark sound, but dubbed by someone else outside of the Black Ark.

So far I’ve got: Rally Rally Round from:

[cover=3892,4022]

And Bo-Yarka Dub and Party Time Dub from

[cover=2986,3090]

Can anyone else add any more?

I think it adds a really interesting dimension to hear Perry’s recordings dubbed by someone else I’m hoping there are more examples

"Party Time Dub" Is actually minimalist dub by Lee Perry it also appeared on the Party Time 12" inch. Most likely "Bo Yarka Dub" is also lee perry mix.

Personally, I love Tubby's dub mix on the "Blackman Time" by Brent Dowe & Tinga Stewart.

Junior Byles "Pretty Fe True" and "Fun And Games" are both wonderful tracks with thunderous Tubby mixes, both tracks will make any subwoofer wobble like jelly.

Both are available as extended mixes on Trojan's excellent "Beat Down Babylon" Byles compilation that was released in the mid to late 80's.

I love those two tunes. The album "Revolution Dub" is mixed in same fashion (Bush Weed, Woman's Love) in the year '75. I never thought they were mixed by Tubby.

I always thought "Blackboard Jungle" was the only dub album which featured Tubby & Lee Perry.

Are you sure? Bo Yarka as I have it sounds far more like Prince Jammy in the driving seat, its too frantic for Perry isn't it?

It is lacking all the great trademarks like spring reverb on drums/rhythm guitar, fading the vocals with delay and the big knob. Well that is just my opinion.

I wouldn't know the sound of spring verb if it sat on my lap so I'll defer to your knowledge .

Perhaps it's just the mastering that makes those two sound in keeping with the rest of the album and just slightly different enough from the black ark sound to fool me... Pitty

Mick you'll know for sure, where are you?,

I don't think anyone can know "for sure". :) But as I recall, "Bo Yarka" is a Prince Jammy mix.

Yes.

There is an album which is recorded at the Ark but not necessarily produced by Scratch, it is called "King Tubby Meets The Upsetter At The Grass Roots Of Dub". There is few non-ark recordings. It is mixed completely by King Tubby, no Scratch involvement.
