Errol Thompson mixed Wailers/Perry classics?

Post by Gabranth »

I read on (the infallible) Wikipedia that the Soul Revolution Album credits Errol Thompson as engineer and Perry as producer. The tunes are obviously from pre-Ark and I guess they were recorded and mixed at Joe Gibbs. So yeah sure, ET's involvement makes sense.

I just always thought that such classics as Sun is shining or Fussing and Fighting having such a brilliant sound mainly (or purely) because of Scratch's genius. Or did ET have a bigger part in how they sound? Because when it comes to the sound of the final product, the engineer's mixing is not to be underestimated.

those songs were Recorded At – Randy's Studio Doubt if ET was involved Perry also engineered his albums. That said this mix could be ET https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYiQj_LUePs Song is from the same era. So maybe true like some books are saying.

Creative engineering (Dub) wasnt invented yet. I would say arrangements of Perry made these albums not the engineering. When Dub emerged engineering/mixing became much more dominant next to arrangements.

You could say that if ET was involved and Perry didnt do his own engineering, ET's contribution was more technical then sound wise. Arrangement, Perry/Marley and studio equipment were the dominant facts IMHO concering those recordings. ET contribution was a minor one. (without disrespecting him, he engineered some great tunes, was of great influences)

Good points, you guys. Thanks! Quoting Siegi "Arrangements of Perry made these albums, not the engineering". This is the answer I was hoping for, but I'm not a blind Upsetter fanboy. ET is great and yes he was involved, but it's not that his final mix made these tracks so fantastic.
