King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown - please help with MATRIX numbers

Post by leggo rocker »

Augustus Pablo - King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown

I have two copies of this LP and was preparing one for selling off on ebay.

I checked carefully the matrix numbers and cross referenced them to the database here.

BOTH my copies have #DSR 2402. But one has the cover listed by RA as matching the matrix, :

http://www.roots-archives.com/display_artwork/5140.jpg

BUT, the other, while having the same matrix looks like it has the cover that seems to match the later (?) pressing which RA says should have matrix DSR 4121

cover here:

http://www.roots-archives.com/display_artwork/5477.jpg

One has the green line on the outside, the other doesn't.

And then I notice a listing on ebay claiming that DSR 4121 is the REAL original JA press.

So now I am confused and wondering if I should keep both (as a collector I am interested in original JA copies whenever possible) as I don't want to sell off anything that is vintage unless I have two copies the same.

Or maybe BOTH are the later pressing and therefore I should BUY the one listed on ebay!!!

Please help me all you knowledgable bredren.

Yard Music DSR 2402 was pressed in 1977, same year as the original pressing on Clocktower. I don't think Agustus Pablo's name was on the original Clocktower cover.

Yard Music DSR 4121 must be a later issue.

OK. Thanks. And what about covers - were there several version of the cover for the first Yard issue?

Also, what came first, Clocktower or Yard. Or were they simultanious?

And are all the mixes the same?

On the Clocktower issue, released before Pablo's Yard version, Pablo's name does not appear on the front of this sleeve, neither does his photo appear on the reverse. These were added onto the Yard sleeve by Pablo.

There is no 'Satta' on the Clocktower pressing which may explain it's ommission from the Yard sleeve & label.

The mixes are slightly different too. Something to do with the mastering.

This LP was also put out in the UK on the Yard label after the US Clocktower & JA Yard Music issues.

For the definitive guide on all Pablo's recorded vinyl output check the discography book

Thanks, I'll search for that book.

In the meantime, can you tell me how to spot a UK Yard pressing and tell it apart from a JA one?

Thanks for the link. But I am still wondering about the covers.

One has the same cover as the Yard version on the King of Dub (collie-Tree) homepage you linked me to. Border is red yellow, white.

But the other has the same cover with a difference. It has the red, yellow AND green stripe on the border, as on the clocktower issue.

Wax, label and I presume mix is the same on both.

As for King of Dub's pages. That man has cost me a LOT of money ! I've been looking at his pages for a long time now counting of the ones I have managed to track down and gnashng my teeth at the ones he has I can't get near too on price - or worse - have never even seen anywhere at any price.

And the Observation of Life, Page One and the Observers LP he has on the front cover was in my original collection in the 70-80s and I get sick in my stomach every time I see it on his page. I sold it back then for maybe a dollar (pound) or even less...

Looking at collie-tree's pages once again has left me pretty depressed. It always has that effect!

It makes me realise what a mammoth task it is to collect these wonderful records - in time, effort and nowadays especially money.

There is stuff there I didn't know existed and when I see it I want to hear it (and hold it)

Yep, I am obsessed. And yes, I need help...

Does the Betty Ford clinic treat people with a vinyl habit?

(and is Mr Collie-Tree an RA reader I wonder?)

The Yard pressing of this LP is quite a mess.

It appears there are even more matrix numbers. So far i was told the matrix could be:

DSR 2402 A // 3 B

DSR 4120 A // 1 B

DSR 4710 A // 1 B

DSR 8226

There is one simple way (so far the infos exist) to know when the matrix were cuted. Actually in many cases the producers had several stuffs to press at the same time (ie several 7" / 12" / LPs). So you have sometime matrix numbers that make sens.

You have to search the RKR data base using the search function:

Search for instance with "DSR 24" (for the press with this matrix DSR 2402 A // 3 B). If you find a Pablo produced 7" with matrix like "DSR 2400" or "DSR 2404" (matrix searched +/- 2) you can assume that the stampers for this LP was cut at the same time as the single you found. Of course if you find a matrix close to the one you want to date BUT for a 7" from another producer, this does not help to date your LP.

I don't have the RKR but I do this at a friend place sometime. It works quite well.

If anyone can search for this four matrix I gave it would be very very nice to give us the results...

What a great site those collie-pages.

It makes me realise just how little I know.

I have been left amazed by all those great dub albums listed many of which I have never seen or heard of.

It makes you wonder how many other sites like this waiting to be discovered.
