They claim reggae is the music of the ghetto.....
Who in your opinion is the singer / group who despite worldwide fame have remained in the ghetto and true to their culture........

A sufferer of the ghetto...........

For me it has to be Junior Byles......

Hi

I disagree, I don`t think it is a daft question.

Over the years many Jamaican artists have found a level of fame both within and outside the reggae world.

They have also remained true to their roots and still reside within the environment within which they started out.

Of course, many of these artist, although acheiving a level of fame, rarely saw the profits that their endeavours or artistry deserved.

They sang their songs for a set fee and if a track became a hit then it was the record producers who reaped the benefits.

These artists made just enough to survive but became known throughout the world due to people like us taking the time and effort to invest in our love of the music.

You don`t have to be rich or live in a big mansion to achieve worldwide recognition.

I believe it was the type of ghetto suffering lives that these artist and musicians lived that gave the music the routhness edginess that it had.

Sugar Minott.

I guess he probably now lives in a nice house in the hills but it seems his heart stayed with the ghetto.

He worked with youth, trying to promote new talent.

Maybe I'm wrong and I believe the hype too much, but it seems Sugar stayed true to his roots.

Ditto Peter Tosh. Yeah, he also had his big house but again, seemed to keep on championing the struggle against the shitstem.
