Storage is always a problem for so much vinyl. It takes up way more space than a stack of Cds or a 250gig external hard drive full of MP3s!

I've been trying to buy a record shop fittings for vinyl as I don't like the records on shelfs. But no luck yet. I like them to be browseable like they are in a shop. Flipping through gives less chance for damage than sliding them out of a shelf unit.

The Royal Mail have these boxes they ship and sort mail in. They are PERFECT for holding 12inch vinyl, because they are about 12.5 inches wide! Each one holds about 60 records. And they are hard plastic, with no lid, have cut out handles on the side, and they are very strong (mail is heavy!). They also a place to slip in a card to label the contents so it shows to the outside.

Someone in the Royal Mail purchasing dept. must have been a record colletor!

Of course, I don't have any of them because they are all property of Her Majesty the Queen and Royal Mail...

;) :)

Jesco:

See here:

Note: I use a bunch record mailer packing card inserts to protect the sleeves from being dented by the edge of the boxes.

Tell your mates to do it like the man who once smuggled an entire car out of a Detroit auto plant by taking one or two components out each day...

Reggaemusicman and Leggo Rocker, thanks for the comments/advice... Actually the 2 boys (6 years and 18 months) love reggae or more specifically ska, so whenever you put a record on they bounce about like crazy endangering the vinyl as well as trying to put the sleeves on their heads etc... I'm older than you Leggo Rocker, it's mad to have kids at my age but I'm keeping the faith and passing the music on!

hey Jesco

I did the kids thing twice. Once in my very early 20s. Now both grown up and the ledest has already given me two bouncing grandkids, both boys, 6 yrs and 6 months!

Then I started another round fifteen years ago, so have a 14, 12 and 10 year old at home.

In between the two lots I managed to sire another boy, after a fling with the daughter of one of Australias richest men while she was doing the Aussie travelling the world thing. He's in line to inherit a substantial share of his grandfathers vast wealth - not that it has done any of the kids in that family any good at all...

Back to the thread:

I've come late to Barry Brown after getting a 12 inch by him, and have just woken up to his considerable talent. I'll look out for the Stand Firm LP.

Leggo Rocker, I've had a bit of a chequered career myself but I've only got 2 I know of and I'm stopping there!

Other Barry Browns I would recommend would be the I'm Not So Lucky Showcase album on Black Roots and the Jukes and Watch 12" on Greensleeves, which has the wonderful, mournful No Shot No Fire by Triston Palma on the other side... I love it.
