record clamp for rare warped reggae vinyl

Post by pisces »

i recently purchased a JA michell record clamp. used on records warped and bowed. has anyone else used this particular brand or somewhat similar device. anybody have reviews on this clamp specifically for reggae records that you've wanted to bring back to life, because of it being warped and bowed. rather than fixing it yourself by using 2 pieced of glass and heating to flatten and all those other unpractiacl methods that might ruin or destroy your rare vinyl.

If you find such a clamp that "really works" then let us know. I have yet to hear tell of such a device.

I was under the impression that record clamps were to stabilise a record on the deck, to stop slippage and to damp down vibrations which might get into the signal path.

I don't see how they could be of benefit with warp as they only push on the label area.

new update on the clamp i got. http://www.needledoctor.com/JA-Michell- ... 8Ta38Naxb0

ok first off, i got this because of a few rare 12" discos and LPs had gotten warped in storage, coz of the heat i had round my area. i did alot a research, and found this clamp to work really good for its valued price.

when i finally got it, i tried it out on my technics 1200 MKII direct drive turntable. it seemed to work just ok with some of the more skinnier vinyl i had, somewhat. i still noticed warpage, so i wasn't that pleased. with the thicker acetate vinyl. the clamp wouldn't even bite on the spindle. so i was pretty vex. i guess with technics, the have much more shorter spindle. and the minumum lenth is suposed to be 8mm.

GOOD NEWS THOUGH:
i figured a way to really make the device work. i had a old technics belt driven turntable and i took the rubber mat off that, because i noticed that it was much thinner than on the 1200's. apparently on my 1200s the rubber mat was just way too thick and it covered most of the spindle. well now with the thinner rubber mat for the platter and now with more of the spindle exposed. i tried the clamp on thick warped vinyl, thin bowed records and jus anything in my collection that were in pretty bad shap because of heat warpage. this clamp truly made the difference. from a bowed record facing up, it flattened out and had good contact with the platter. warpage vianyl was also was brought down to such a minimum that you cou'dn't even notice that there was any warp on the record what so ever. the clamp method is worth the investment and a way better solution than all these other crazy methods that would more than likely deform or totally destroy you record. a way more safer method. sadly, this doesn't work with 7" 45s. i can't wait til they come up with something like that though.

with this clamp its also used for stabalizing the record on the platter, also helps with way less record wear and and your needle.

i know there gots to be some people out there that have been waiting for something like this to come around.and to finally listen to some records that you never thought you'd ever be able to play due to warpage making it unplayable.

papa leggo,

your right about stabalizers. there are stablizers out there that are just used as weight that you put on the middle of the label to prevent slippage and dampening.
but if read below, you'll get a better understanding. the clamp doesn't weigh and isn't used for its weight but for it's clamping method. read below and you'll understand how it unwarps an the vinyl while on the platter of your turntable. but of course that's only when its on your turntable playing, but when you take it off the turntable, it's still warped or bowed of coarse.
JA Michell Record Clamp

Modern vinyl records are thin and flexible and often warped or bowed. As most record do not lie flat on the turntable platter, sound reproduction suffers due to undamped vinyl resonances caused by the stylus riding on an unsupported record. Records, which are bowed downwards, contact the platter at the outer edge but not in the middle. Conversely, record that are warped or bowed upwards tend to rock on the platter. In these instances anti-skating compensation is less effective and record wear is increased substantially by the lateral or vertical seesawing motion of the tonearm/cartridge combination. The Mitchell Record Clamp solves these problems by bringing the record into more intimate contact with the platter.

How It Works
The supplied black felt washer is placed on the spindle. Then place the record on the platter. When a record is placed over the washer, the record label area will remain raised slightly. Now place the clamp on the record, press and turn the knurled knob clockwise to lock the unit. The record clamp's peripheral edge will force down the outside of the record label area thereby causing the record to completely contact the platter surface.

To remove the clamp, it is only necessary to turn the knob 1/8 turn counterclockwise. The knob does not have to be unscrewed completely.

Thanks Pisces, that info is very helpful. I think I too will invest in this device and, er, give it a spin!

Anyone who collects reggae vinyl, or any vinyl, will have plenty of warped records so this could be a great thing to have.
