Apologize if this should have been posted under the current "Great 12-inchers" topic... but anyway, does anyone know for sure if the 12" vinyl version (**see below**), is a "true" DISCO version that mixes right in to the DJ version, as compared to the same [?] "extended version" that is available on the recent VP CD reissue of Visions of Dennis Brown - see: [cover=7856,2741]
**VINYL VERSION: Dennis Brown - Say What You Say (Extended Mix) / ? - This Girl Of Mine (Extended Mix) (ORIGINAL PRESS) Joe Gibbs 1979...**
Reason I ask is that the "extended version" on the re-issued Visions CD, *in my opinion*, is just two tunes immediately back-to-back and is not a 'true' disco mix. Am I making sense? I know you all know where I'm coming from on this... I mean we can ALL *digitally make* different "extended versions" of tunes we may have in our collections (using MP3's and/or WAV files) with readily avaialble music software... Of course, for our own personal enjoyment !!
BUT, that's not the real deal (aka. vinyl), so to speak.
Anyway, thoughts? opinions?

I'm not sure what you mean but I have the original JA version of the Joe Gibbs 12" and one that has a slightly different label claiming to be 'Made in USA'.
Musically they're both the same. On Side A you have Dennis's vocal followed by the dub. On Side B there is U-Brown's version titled 'Funny Money' that has some of Dennis's vocals remaining and is also followed by a dub. But this one sounds more like two 7" cuts put together.
I haven't got the Visions CD to be able to tell whether what's on there matches the 12" but most genuine Discomixes have a vocal and a dub or DJ version welded onto it as the second half. Some people want a smooth transition in the middle whereas others prefer the latter part to announce itself by noticably kicking in. Neither way is right or wrong.
But if the Visions CD has a vocal followed directly by the DJ version then I can confirm that this does not happen on the original 12".

Even though I was maybe not as clear as I could've been, you answered my question. On the Visions CD, that tune is track #10 (Say What You Say / Money Honey) and after about 2:12 into Dennis' vocal, there's about a 1-2 second break... But, it's funny, the more I listen to it the transition is very slight. But, I guess I'm one who just prefers the smoooth - *seamless if you will* - transition. I didn't mean to infer one was right or wrong. Sounds like the vinyl 12" is the smoother version.Version Control wrote: I haven't got the Visions CD to be able to tell whether what's on there matches the 12" but most genuine Discomixes have a vocal and a dub or DJ version welded onto it as the second half. I have the Visions LP (vynil) but can't find it right now and I also have the 12 inch record (Joe Gibbs US press, 1979).
The 12 inch in my opinion is not a "TRUE DISCO MIX". When I think of Disco Mix I think of a 12" record with the vocal at the beginning of the record immediately followed by the DJ cut mixed in smoothly or or 1 track where the singer drops out and the DJ comes in.
The 12 inch I have has the vocal mixed into a dub version on one side and a DJ cut with a dub version mixed in on the other side.
