New Ub40s

What do you guys think about the new ub40s with Maxi Priest and Dustin Cambell taking over of Ali Cambell, I thought the fact that they are staying together is good and i look forward to seeing the new ub40s and their new album 24-7.

I dont think ali cambells solo career will turn out so good, but i hope they can work out their problems.

They haven't produced anything really worth having since 197-something, so they can't really get much worse - can they?

Yes, you are right, that is probably why they are one of the most successfully reggae bands in the world. You are stuck in the past open your mind and ears.

Have to admit that I am with Leggo on this one - although I fully accept that being 46 years old I am a dinosaur stuck in the past - but after the Signing Off LP they lost most of their edge. Present Arms was OK but once they decided that they weren't a political band and seemed to concentrate mainly on cover versions I really lost interest. For me they will always be a little bit like Misty in Roots in as much as IMO both bands produced there best work very early on in there careers and could never quite reach those peaks again.

Hey, I'm 23years and far from what you would call 'stuck in the past' and still don't like most of their post-Present Arms stuff. However, I have to admit, that their last or so album Who You Fighting For was not as bad as I expected. I heard it by accident and was pleasently surprised, that its sound was much more similar to say One In Ten than to Can't Help Falling In Love.

Its difficult for Ub40, they have always had a hard time with critics of reggae, the ideal situation would of been for them to of stopped after their early stuff and of started a new band, fresh.

Since that time they have managed to tarnish their image and thats a shame, but when you do *really* well, its very easy to be criticised for your work which *isnt so good* (in comparison to your best).

An example would be Bob marley; imagine that he hadnt died and had carried on for another 30 odd years creating new songs. Imagine that none of his tunes within that 30 years were anywhere near as good as the music he once made because people *always* compared his new stuff to his old stuff; difficult to beat.

Now in my oppionion, Bob would not be so prolific in history if this was the case, and in this situation perhaps UB40 would of been better off packing it in back in *their* day.

I'm really looking forward to hearing Maxi Priest with UB40. I think it's going to be a great combination.

So, Bugu, how many records a band sells is the ONLY barometer to how good their music is?

Jeez! I've got it all wrong all this time.

I should have been listening to Britney Spears all this time and not seeking out obscure reggae that only ever got 500 copies made!

I said yes you are right...I have read you're posts before you are always right. Open your mind and your ears too much of one thing is good for nothing-i think you have too much drum & bass in your head and rambled your brain to tolerate other kinds of reggae besides 197s.
