prince alla questions

Post by general bundi »

hi,
I have a cd of prince alla called "lion a go bite you" and I really love the tune "right fun" so what is the vinyl release (label, 7" or 12" or lp) because Idon't listen to cd to often and i would love to play it on my turntable.
There is a another tune on this cd called "ruff way ahead" from his freedom sound period, I love it too and when I saw a repress on freedom sound few months ago, I bought it But it was a different version, I mean on the cd version Prince is really amazing , giving all he got, with some part of the song sung inna falsetto style (like jr murvin a little bit) but on the 7 i bought he sing in his classic ras alla style and it's good but i would like to cacth the other version wich seems to be earlier....if someone can help. Thanks

I have a bootleg/live recording from 2002 from Prince Allah, which is quite lame btw ( chanting over well-known studio one riddims, like skylarking... )
from Genesis to Revelation here I come ,here I come to dub the nation.

I have that CD - pretty weak material overall I've always thought. I may be completely wrong but I doubt there is a vinyl version of the album. It sounds like a collection of recordings - possibly some that were released as 7" at some time or other - this is one of those sort of dubious provenance releases. Most of the tracks have an unfinished off island sound to them. Pleasant enough in its own way but lacking the crucial vibes you can hear on the Only Love Can Conquer collection, Heaven is My Roof and even the quite different Sweet Sensation LP.
This probably doesn't help, but I'm a big fan of Prince Alla and had to post a comment!

respect...

I have it. Like Alla's Cornerstone LP this CD consists of tracks that were taken from different periods in his career. I assume the tracks you mention must be on vinyl somewhere because this is not a "proper album" and sounds like it was put together from many different singles.

Since people have commented about whether or not they like this disc........

I've always wondered why artists like Alla and Johnny Clarke tried to make softer dancehall tracks. IMO Their voices are very out of place on dancehall tunes. They have that raw roots sound that just doesn't fit that style. It's almost comparable to an elder bluesman trying to make an 70s funk song.

I have to concur regarding Prince Alla's best material being the harder 'eartical roots tracks. Sweet Sensation is a mixed bag, but I have soft spot for a few of the tracks.
And I do really like some of his non-root efforts, such as Chatty Woman, young Wings. And check his Rock Steady tracks as Keith Blake. Light stuff, but excellent all the same!
Could never get my ears around the 'Children Gather Round' Shaka produced set though some seem to think it very good. What do you think of that one?
