what was the name of this recorder?

Post by adilisha »

Recently somebody posted here in another thread (can't find it) about a little box with which you can record vinyl without using the method soundcard + computer. I had seen this thing before, but was not sure if it is worth the money. The poster (Leggo?) was satisfied though. What was the name of this recorder again? Can't remember. Please help ...

This is a good little item.

The ease of use is a key feature. Note how many mixes I've uploaded to www.leggorockers.com/downloads since I got mine! This is because of the ease of use. So easy that each time I play some 12 inches, I record them!

It is great for digitising vinyl, with pretty good sound quality (great sound for the price).

It is ultra convenient. About the size of an early Tape Walkman.

You need a suitable USB drive. Flash memory sticks work OK with it but there are some minor bugs here.

Sometimes, I plug in the memory stick and the iKey refuses to 'see' it. Simple to fix, turn the iKey off and on back on and it usually sees the stick.

It won't recognise any MAC formatted disks, only Fat32 and NFTS (or whatever the other one is called). But this isn't a problem as all memory sticks come Windows formatted by default. And of course a MAC can read any Windows drive without any problem at all.

The device is ultra simple to use, and when you plug the stick into your PC afterwards the MP3 is there, drag and drop into your target folder on your PC and play, or upload, and that's that. No messing.

You can also use iPods as the target drive, but these are a little more fiddly to work with as you have to go deep into the iPod's settings to enable you to use it for storing the output from the iKey.

Make sure you buy the PLUS, not the early model, as the PLUS is the one to have, many more features.

in your opinion would this be good for recording vinyl to mp3? meaning. I have nuff LP and 45 that I want to digitize so I can listen to in the car. Is this better for recording live mixes? Because I would need to record and then name the files.

It is very good for recording vinyl direct to mp3. If you wanted to record and name tracks separately, this little box can be helpful.

By pressing record and then stop for each individual track you'll create a number of mp3 files all sequentially numbered. All tracks are then ready separated, so easy to rename with the actual track name and catalogue. Renaming the files can of course be done in your normal file manager on the PC, really easy even for anyone who can only do really basic computer stuff.

Selecting the MP3 quality is really easy, and you can even record in high quality uncompressed WAV format.

Because it has an on-board phono amp you could even just plug the record deck into the iKey, no amp and speakers needed, and record direct. You can then monitor the recording via the headphone port either with mini speakers or headphones.

It is also excellent for outdoor or live recording. I will use this to record interviews for instance.

Note that NO COMPUTER is needed to record with an iKey, the PC is only needed to actually read the resulting files from the chosen storage device.

I understand you can even use USB card readers with smart cards (digital camera food) in them as storage for the recordings but I haven't actually tried this.

The unit itself has no card reader or hard drive, only a USB port to output the recording to your storage device in real time during actual recording.

This means it is less likely to fail due to being carried and knocked around.

Thanks for the quick reply and more info on this one.
I'm tired of the line/mic in of the computer soundcard giving problems everytime I want to do a recording.
Somehow I had in my head that the device costs 50 Euro, but this was for a simpler model of theirs. Will heed your advice Leggo and wait until I can spill out the 150 Euro for the Plus model. Thanks for your help.

Blessings!

Yes, Don. A really good idea. It's not Pro Audio or Audiophile kit by any means, but it's very very good at doing what it does. It gives people without lots of musical or computing experience a really easy way to get recordings done.
