Burning Spear-Travelling

Post by Dave »

Roots Archives-
I have an LP produced by Clock Tower Records entitled Travelling. This is a Burning Spear record, featuring: Augustas Pablo, Johnny Clarke, Tappa Zukie, Ronnie Davis, King Tubby, Uprising, and Tower All Stars. Musicians include: Robbie, Family Man, Bagga, Carly Davis, Sly Dunbar, Touter Harvey, Pablo, Tony Chin, and Ossie Bongo. It would be nice to have a page of this. Just a suggestion. Thanks.

Pablove Black recorded "High Locks", a melodica track on the "Foggy Road" riddim for Coxsone Dodd. Never knew about an Augustus Pablo cut until it was listed on this LP!

I see that there is a page for Burning Spear's "Travelling" album on *this* site:

Does anyone have any additional information about this album? Is this a compilation of Winston Rodney's productions? Do the other artists --- for example, Johnny Clarke --- perform **with** Burning Spear, or is more of a deejay-type thing with Johnny Clarke singing over a Burning Spear original?

Is the album any good? Worth purchasing?

That album "Travelling" is at least very surprising, yet a tad uneven. The Johnny Clarke songs are covers, Burning Spear is only featured on the title cut. The Augustus Pablo instrumentals are good, but not what you're used to expect from Pablo; they are very upbeat, far from his trademark Far East sound. Some people like it, but I value these Pablo tunes mainly as a curiosity. Although Mount Of Olives Dub _is_ rather solid.

I've heard that the Johnny Clarke cuts are actually Bunny Lee productions, but clearly at least "Travelling" is Spear's own. The last two tracks are pretty dodgy, as they are actually the same track, which is a dub of a supposedly Spear-produced track mixed ina Garvey's Ghost stylee. The original version is sadly omitted, but luckily the dub includes some of the vocals.

Still, I find this album worthy of its price, for those Johnny Clarke cuts are excellent _and_ pretty rare, I think. Yet especially I value their versions. The one Tappa Zukie track "Ital Pot" is a scorcher, and I love hearing Spear's rhythms dubbed out properly, with King Tubby's style echoes. I do like the Garvey's Ghost type of mixing as well, but King Tubby's style is just more, well, satisfying...

The album as a whole is still _very_ shady, and if you want to support the industry, I'm not sure whether this is the best place to start... ;)
