"Jamaican Recordings" King Tubby "Lost Treasures"?

just picked up King Tubby's Lost Treasures on the Jamaican Recordings label... is it legit? i have heard LOTS of rumour about this label, so now i'm sceptical...

BTW, it's a NICE japanese re-import - it's the UK press, but has a japanese TOTAL wraparound OBI with track info...

These aren't Tubby mixes, they are new dub mixes of old riddims. Some people enjoy them, others are disappointed. Let your ears be your guide.

Personally I never tire of new mixes of some of those classic riddims, even if they weren't actually mixed by "The King".

Agreed, it shouldn't be misrepresnted. The mixes should stand, or fall, on their own merit. It's this kind of stuff that scares people away from the music.

thanks for the info... i was a little suspicious - the echo is WAY too clean for 70's production... the tracks are good, i am enjoying it...

It's pretty easy to tell when Tubby *didn't* mix something - you hear more than 4 distinct channels of instrumentation at various times in the track.

in the case of Kingston recordings, the digital plug-in reverbs and delays are another sure tell sign.

I personally wouldn't buy any record with original tunes treated like described above. If it is officially a remix or version it's a different thing.

How about their other releases? The I-Roy Heavier Than Lead LP on the sublabel Kingston Sounds for example? Do the other releases receive the same treatment?

KIngston sounds is usually allright. Only the dub albums are ruined by modern overdubbing.

There is no re-mix involved here. It's a mix-down from the real master multi-track tapes of mainly Bunny Lee productions, by an engineer collegue of his. They haven't taken dub mixes and done anything to them, they are dubbed from the "ground up".

The mix of "Cherry Oh Baby" on a good set makes your spine wobble (which of course is a very good thing....!)
