Eddie Son House Jr´s Library Recordings (A. Lomax)
On one song you will hear even a train stomping by.
That´s my favourite blues album along w. Hound Dog
Taylor & the Houserockers 1971(hard stuff!!!)

Hi Gibey

Love the Hound Dog stuff. Must check out the Eddie Son House Jr´s Library Recordings. I don't know that album. Good call. Any recommendations gratefully accepted! I used to have "Father of the Delta Blues: The Complete 1965 Sessions" by Son House, but have no idea where it is now.

The only Lomax I have is one of the Parchman Farm recordings (I think it's called Murderous House - I couldn't find it on Amazon. I'll dig it out tonight to check). Do you have this? Unreal. Particularly the first track, which is a chain gang singing. Absolutely incredible.

I also have his book - "The Land Where the Blues Began" - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Land-Where-Blue ... F8&s=books

And the DVD of the same name as well. Both worth checking out if you don't already have them.

Howdy 6anbatte,

have the 65er sessions too when son was in his 60s & had to relearn guitar playing from almost zero. The Library Recordings date back to the early 40s & Son´s playing is much better here. Son never was a guitar wizard but compensates through his powerful unique, almost preaching voice & brilliant sense for tunes. I don´t have ´Murderous House´ & ´The land where the blues began´ but will check out those. If you like Oldtimey or Appalchian music check out Roscoe Holcomb - An untamed sense of control (I was slightly put off by his high pitched voice but gut used to it) or the lovely banjo album ´All roads lead to land´ by COB´s Clive Palmer.

Received yesterday Pablo´s/Enos McLeod´s ´Thriller´
which falls more in the instrumental category.
Nice album: Killers are Marcus Garvey, Skibo Rock & Thriller

Hi Gibey

I searched for those Library recordings and I couldn't find them. Where did you get them?

I most definitely love all of that stuff. My all time favourite "album" is Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. (I play harmonica and fingerstyle acoustic guitar so this stuff is etched on my soul!)
This is another classic - "Good For What Ails You: Music of the Medicine Shows 1926-1937". Total madness. Do you have this?

Will definitely get Roscoe and Clive Palmer.

Also hearing rave reviews about a live Friends of Old Time Music album that I believe has just come out.

Have a Mundell/Pablo groove thing going at present. So bought "The Blessed Youth", "...Chanting with the father", "...In A Firehouse" and, er, a load of other good stuff that I can't remember at present!

Thanks for the old-timey heads-up!

Hey Gibey

Just ordered "The Folk Arrival 1961-1965 [Box set] [Live]" ~ Various Artists - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... 76-1820407

It's getting 5 star reviews everywhere.

And Roscoe and Clive. I would have bought the Roscoe on the back of the cover!

Is this the Son House? - http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Library- ... F8&s=music

And a shed load of reggae, of course, to stay on topic!

Hi 6anbatte,

I bought my ´Son House´in a local record store approx. 15 years ago. There´s a more recent release
from 2003 with coloured photo. Mine´s bright blue.
The one you mentioned above seems to be the same one
with a few bonus tracks.
I will definitely buy ´Good for what ails you´in
march, since my pocket allows me only to pick two
discs per month. Another one to torment my wife´s
ears...hahaha...
Harry Smith´s: Found only Vol. 4 which should be the best one, is that true?
I am currently listening to Robin Williamson´s &
Clive Palmer´s ´Just like the Ivy´. You´ll find
some soundclips at amazon.uk.
´Folk Arrival 1961-1965´is surely a good choice!
A couple of weeks ago I ordered Trojan´s ´Flashing Echo´, but man - here you must be able to sit very still...
I tried to play guitar & flute 20 years ago, but
I´m much more suitable to be a listener...

So far, enjoy evening,

Gibey

Hi Gibey

Good to hear from you. The Harry Smith you "need" to get is Anthology of "American Folk Music Vols 1-3"

Not sure where you are so this is the Amazon.com link - http://www.amazon.com/Anthology-America ... 14-0049566

This is the Amazon.co.uk link - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anthology-Ameri ... 76-1820407

For some bizarre reason it took me ages to find these albums even when I knew what I was looking for. Odd. A lot of money, but it does run over 6 CDs. Ultimately you won't have to by another old-timey album once you own this!! ;-)
Incidentally you will not believe "Peg And Awl" by Carolina Tar Heels. Who are these people.

No sure what you meant regarding "Flashing Echo" (it's been a long day!!), but I bought that recently for "Out Of Order Dub" to go with Ken Boothe's vocal cut "You're No Good". Genius!

I must 'fess up that I listen more than play, but do love playing. "The life so short, the craft so long to learn"!!

Howdy 6anbatte,

thanx for the ´Anthology´ sources. Must have those!

Son House: Forgot to tell you that I have the
Biograph release ´Delta Blues´.
I´m from Germany & ordered ´Flashing Echo´ from
Caiman America. They´re quite cheap but mostly
not the quickest, which means you need good
seat-leather as we would say here...& I´m so
damned curious for ´Out of Order Dub´.
Your ´Black Echoes Dublist´ is real great & I
was shocked to hear that they first realeased
´King Tubby meets the Rockers Uptown´ in the U.S.
Must admit that ´Grassroots´ is a fine album, but
not a number 1 for me.

Hi Gibey

"Anthology" is a must have. Harry was an absolute genius. I think he ended up as a tramp or something bizarre. The 2 books that come with it are fantastic. The discs are split into sky (blue cover), earth (green) and fire (red) and all the tracks relate to the next track in some way. It might just be a lyric! Hours of fun!

Ah I see I'll check the Biograph release.
Yes, I used to order most of my stuff from Caiman USA, but I wonder whether they have had a change of management recently as I have been really disappointed with the service. I don't mind waiting a while as I tend to have a massive pipeline, but when I wait a long time and the wrong disc arrives I really to get rather annoyed!

I hope you like "Out Of Order Dub". I had that on 12" (the b-side to "You're No...") which I bought after hearing it at the Afro Club in Brighton in the late 70's, early 80's! Not sure what happened to it. In fact, I think it was locked in a draw at work. Firstly, I lost the key to it and was then made redundant! Funnily enough recovering my vinyl wasn't top of my list of "must do's". Doh!

I am so pleased you liked the Black Echoes list. I found that absolutely facinating, but not many people appeared to share my enthusiasm for it. You may be amused to learn I have just ordered the Studio 16 vinyl pressing of "..Grassroots..."!
