They will also 'upgrade' a record they already have by buying one in better condition. Very serious sufferers are then unable to bring themselves to sell the duplicate copy.
I have two copies of Aswad's "New Chapter of Dub"... my excuse is that my first copy has the names of the previous owners scrawled on the exquisite cover, but my second copy is untouched. Do I have vinylitus?

I haven't got that many duplicates but one I have was down to another symptom of vinylitis which is not listening in the shop before you buy, because you don't trust the shop's decks and want to keep your purchase pristine... hence in the height of my house music addiction I bought Todd Terry's "Jumpin'" on a one-sided (laser etched on the other side) Italian 12" at vast expense... got it home to discover it was the same mix as on a Strictly Rhythm 12" I already had, which had another 5 versions.
The house music addiction is currently in remission because nobody else in my house can stand it (forced to take off a Robert Armani record in early days of relationship!)

Another symptom is that you buy a record only to subsequently realise that you already have it.
Ouch! You know you've got it REALLY bad when that happens...

Older and wiser Jah Glu...
So, knowing that I can't rely on my memory, I sorted all my records into LPs by Artist and date, 12 inches by label and catalogue number.
This has helped me reduce accidental duplicates to almost zero.
Of course, I still have and buy duplicates for all the reasons mentioned before and understandable only by fellow sufferers.

yes
In the last year or 2 ,i have bought some lp ,take them home to discover i alreaddy own it.I thought for sure my memory of every single piece of vinyl i own was stored well in my memory banks. But its happened 4 times now.I recently put all my vinyl on a text, and put it on my ipod so hopefully wont happen again. When ordering on line its never a problem i do have an detailed Excell spreadsheet full of details of all my vinyl, wich i refrence before any online purchase.
i could go on and on about my sypmtons ,it is funny to see similiar conditions in others tho.I am not alone is comforting.

That's another classic symptom of the disorder in its more serious stages!
However, while I tried to do this once, it was already too late.
You need to start cataloging your stuff right from the start otherwise doing it for several thousand records is going to take half your life.
