They may cost a bomb on eBay now I suppose, but the sound quality of the original UK Lightning issues (Vols 1-3) is fine. Still no sleeve notes though.

I always found the lightening issues were better pressings BUT not so well mastered. They sound thin compared to the Joe Gibbs originals.

Roots-Archives have been sent a re-issue to review.
I haven't yet been able to get hold of the sound files myself to check out the sound quality of the re-issue. Once I do, I'll write a review. But I don't want to review it until I have checked out how well (or poorly) this issue has been produced.
Watch this space.

I've managed to download and listen to African Dub Part One on the re-issue and it sounds ok.
Hard to tell for sure though as I don't have the original CDs, just MP3s from them, which makes it very hard to be sure what the CD is like - especially as I really don't like the sound quality of any MP3 recording. Too harsh, sound too sharp. Not warm like vinyl.
I'll try to get a review done on these soon.
One thing is for certain, the music is superb. Absolutely top notch dubbing from the man called Errol T.
It really takes me back listening to these African Dubs again...

A bit off topic, orignal LP wise for a minute.
Anyone notice the really low mixed vocals on Side 1 of LP 1?
It is especially noticeable on Midnight Movie & Lime Key Rock.

Am really sorry you get no answer Jah T, but you seem to be askin about the sound quality of some new CDs rather than what is on the original recordings/releases. Maybe all those voters have other versions like me?
But if you (or anyone else) haven't already heard the albums at all, I have two comments:
1. They are good examples of familiar rhythms in dub, and I'm very happy I have them, but they're nothing more. They shouldn't be treated as some kind of holy grail.
2. Most people overstate the sound effects angle. Yes there are plenty of babies, lavatories and motor vehicles on Chapter 3, but the first two LPs are done as pretty straight dubwise things. And I don't talk about Chapter 4 because I don't think it part of the series - more a case of "African Dubs 1-3 did well outernationally, so let's call this new dub album 'Vol 4' to help it sell."
Meanwhile - Happy New Year to everyone, and a special 'Thank You' to those at RA who took the time to answer my own queries.
