What a tragedy for JA, they say 80% of the archive has been stolen. I'm still waiting to hear wether or not the theft included the huge film archives of all the old JBC video footage, if the video archive is part of what was stolen then this will be the biggest loss of cultural history imaginable!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it does not include this as i seem to think they where kept on a different site but we will have to wait and see.
Apparently these JBC records with the JBC stamp or letters have been floating round record markets for a few years now, i guess it's hard to prove if they are stolen or not.
I'm trying find out more details on exactly has gone missing and may be organising some kind of project to help rebuild the archive so if anyone feels they can contribute in anyway please get in touch.
This was Jamaica's largest collection of vinyl, and was a historical record of Jamaican's musical progress and was there history, without it they have no record of this music that was so important, so i think this is a time where Jamaica truely needs the help of the Reggae community world wide.
Lets hope they can bring someone to justice for this, and rebuild as much of it as they can.

The period is just so big to come up with concrete facts about the 'Hows' of the disappearance of the recordings.Evidence could be destroyed.People die....so complicated.I suspect negligence on the part of JBC.

Re: Original JA Recordings go missing
as far as i know JBC have nothing to do with it, they are just the original owners of the material, i seem to think they passed it all on to the national archive.
From what the press clips say, it sounds like that Belgium company was responsible for the building at the time, but it also mentions that they where doing some transport contract nearby. So sounds like they are not the type of guys who should be responsible for a national treasure! i'm sure all will be revealed soon.

we all know what happens to private collections when the owners die... sometimes they are sold one piece after another, sometimes they go to some museum or some institution.leggo rocker wrote:At least some of those naughty collectors you all love to hate have got some pretty comprehensive cultural libraries saved for the future.
I disapprove the fact that the african masterpieces (by example) are scattered all over the world... private collectors, museums from france, belgium, england, they will tell you they make a great job for african history but the point is that africans have been deprived of their history and if they want to study it they've got to travel a lot OUTSIDE africa.
I know it's maybe too soon for the common people to regard jamaican records as history and cultural heritage but here I hope we all know what it means.
don't you think it would be much more fair if collectors decided to help jamaica to have his own archive instead of spending their money on building partial collections which no one have access and probably will get lost?
if their intentions were really to preserve jamaica's musical history why wouldn't they do that?
meanwhile records are damaged, broken or lost during shipping from collector to collector...

Leggo-
I feel for you since you do seem to get a lot of grief for collecting (which is something you love to do). Some of us are more interested in hearing and spreading the music to as many as possible (I know you have your website) and not as invested in labels and and pressings. I don't think either type of fan is wrong. Reggae has become A LOT like blues music with some who study it and others who connect to it because it is a reflection of how they feel about life. Both are necessary. Without collectors many rare works would never be unearthed and re-issued. Without the general fans the music would not be carried on to future generations it would just be historically documented like in a museum.
It is a shame that someone has decided to rob future generations of being able to hear many great tunes from the JBC. I hope the material eventually resurfaces and is back in the hands of those that will appreciate it and spread it. It seems odd to me that they say this has been going on for several years. They must not have been totally invested in either archiving it and/or allowing people to hear or view it.

Thanks for the support Jason.
Sadly I doubt any of this JBC collection will ever be found again. This stuff is long gone.
