I also found the 'Post Black Ark' part of People Funny Boy depressing.

His behaviour and antics get very tiresome to read about and I ended up asking myself why no one had actually physically harmed Scracth considering some of the stupid things he did. Reading it actually spoiled some of the 'myth' of the man.

I haven't heard all of the mans music from this period, but the stuff I have heard is quite patchy and hard to listen to in full, mostly because of his stream-of-consciousness type vocals.

Despite all that I am still keen to see the movie and maybe Perry will speak coherently about his life in music rather than his usual quasi-mystic nonsense.

Even though we have seen many older clips of Scratch, I think it will be good to see them in the context of a story along with the more recent footage.

He is 72 now and maybe he will see it as a last opportunity to tell his side of the story.

This is the link to the original video clip: -

I wonder when that On-U sound documentary finally will come out. It has some unreleased video material from Perry....

Oh dear. I had no idea there was a documentary.
I definitely share the reservations of some of the posters on this issue.

I went nuts in the mid to late nineties getting every LP production I could get my hands on but really after the Black Ark burned there is nothing worth listening to - in my humble opinion.

I would be delighted to see footage of LP at his pinnacle of production alchemy, say in the Black Ark working on the Congos album - but I'm not aware of such footage existing - so is this more people (musicians, producers, blackwell) talking shite about what they think of LP and how he changed their lives and LP himself ranting incoherently - or is there some never before seen stuff?
Is it for a general audience or for the people who already know too much and should probably have sense enough to look the other way?

Lee Perry was responsible for so much great work, but unlike other equally great operators in the Jamaican scene he has been over exposed and I can't for the life of me figure out how he continues to be so important to so many people in a current way. Historically IMPORTANT. Currently irrelevant.
I saw him live once and I would say, never again. If you don't show up with a decent band don't bother.

Let's hope my reservations are completely unfounded!

Saw it at BAM in Brooklyn. It's amazing. It mainly focuses on his birth/youth until the burning of the Ark. Bob Marley is highlighted. Junior Murvin is highlighted. Congos are a huge part. Ends with him touring as a performer and getting into a crazy fight with a drunk man in a tourist shop in the US somewhere. The scene is unbelievable. I dont wanna spoil it so I'll say no more. Perry is interviewed at length and speaks very clearly about his life. There's also a ton of 'incoherent' monologues from perry's past - archival footage. Definitely worth watching if it comes to your town.

I'll be on the look out for it then despite my misgivings!
