Do you mean the Black Art and Black Swan pressings? Unless I am mistaken the track ordering is different.
"Super Eight" opens with "I've Got The Groove" and "To Be..." with "Midnight Hour - Ya Ya".

... right, the trackorder is very different; check Ron's Smokey Room for comparison of both ... again a fine example of ChriSS Bleckwall destroying the Upsetter sequence just as with Scratch The Super Ape ... also the matrix is handetched on the Black Art btw ... and my copy of the sleeve is a Pioneers album inside out ...

I REALLY like this type of reggae vinyl mystery! But I love it more when an answer tot he question comes along. And I think we may be getting a little closer to the bottom of this one.

I bought it off ebay and was very surprised to only have one person bidding against me and even more surprised that my proxy bid wasn't pushed as hard as it might have been.

I was prepared to pay a LOT more than I did for this LP!

It's one of the most beautiful vocal LPs in all of reggae IMHO.

I also have the Black Swan pressing. Sadly, although it is otherwise MINT one track has a deep scratch.

When I get home from I will dig it out and make a direct comparison of matrix to see I they are indeed off the same stamper.

In the listing, the seller claimed that this is the very first press, coming to UK a few weeks before the Black Swan issue.

One important point here, my copy of Super Eight isn't the one with a cover, and it is the one with 'promotional records' and came with an Upsetters Disco Bum 12 inch sleeve - label is as in the picture here:

Bought this Black Swan copy in a 2nd hand shop relatively recently so have no idea about it's history. It's in absolutely pristine condition, which is always a *worry*!

*I-4 ILPS 9504 A2 EQ JONZ
I-6 ILPS 9504 B3 EQ*

There is something scribbled out between the B and the 3, which is impossible to read.

These two pressings are completely different.

The stamper is 100% different. The run in on side two of the Black Art copy is very narrow. And of course the track order is different.

My Black Swan has the exact same matrix as 6anbatte's copy. Except I think EQ is in fact EG (see below as it is clearer on the BA press). The scribbled out number between the B and the 3 is in fact '2' which is what is on the Black Art pressing.

Black Art Matrix =

ILPS 9504 A1 EG JONZ
ILPS 9504 B2 EG

The matrix A1 and B2 compared to A2 B3 would suggest the Black Art preceeded the Black Swan.

But what I still wonder is about this 'promotional records' tag. This only appears on one pressing, the 'other' Black Art pressing is without this.

As my PM to 6anbatte,are the A1/B2 and A2/B3 just another set of stampers ? Surely the likes of Island etc. would use multiple sets of stampers to achieve the volumes required for a large run ?
