There's no way any legitimate label would put out anything sourced from MP3s. Perhaps you mean audio *level* compression? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_level_compression

I've seen you bash MP3s in a few threads here. A properly encoded MP3 is indistinguishable from the vinyl or CD it came from. This has been proven in double-blind studies, which you can perform yourself with [ABX software](http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/ind ... entry74066).

There's nothing wrong with it. It just suffers from the limitations of physical media. That is, there's only a fixed supply of it, so if you weren't lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to get the original, you have to pay wads of cash for it. And if you don't have wads of cash for it... tough.

If you dismiss ABX tests just because they're software, well, clearly you're part of the Luddite faction of reggae fans. How are you posting these messages? Do you send them by carrier pigeon to a friend with a computer?

For one thing im talking about making music.If you start digital and then proceed digital it loses sound quality each time you record it.
Also it aint about digital its about how you set your levels and if you dont do that from the start you will be messing about in techno world cos your not a sound engineer.
It is IMO and perhaps you should open up your minds to the first part of sound engineering and then you would not need all these expensive gadets cos you could have bought the original record.
There are a lot of good reissues and represses but you need to know what are the real ones from the fakes.

Not if you use lossless formats in every step.

For the record I'm completely against audio level compression which is what I think you're talking about here. It destroys the dynamic range of the recording.

No, in many cases we couldn't have bought the original record. There's no way I could afford to buy even half of the more obscure albums in my MP3 collection. There was no way I could have bought them when they came out either, because I was born in the wrong place (US Pacific Northwest) at the wrong time (1985).

I dont like digital. Compression can be analogue or digital but now its all one thing digital.
I hear a old reggae tune digitally remastered and digitally compressed its sounds like a different version.
W in the UK were poor and bought records rather than today they spend loads and loads on computer stuff you will fill me in im sure with £200 for some software rather than using hands on a bass or keyboard got down the second hand shop for $20 USD.
It has always been a skill to find bargins and still is today not every reggae tune is on ipossies and mp3s only 40% of it has been put on cds and the coputer system.
Thats just LPs wait till you get the mind field of 7" and 12" inches.oh i forgot its all one system called ipoddies so you wont know that it aint from a LP.

Surely if you can record vinyl direct to flac (as mentioned) which doesnt lose any of the rates, youd lose no quality? unless your sound input cant take the frequencies.

No, you wouldn't lose any noticeable quality. Any perceived quality degradation is purely psychological, similar to the placebo effect.
