Don't you mean for the next service patch?

The next new build of Windows itself is way off, they haven't even even actually finished Vista yet!

widows - I mean Windows 6 is in the works. Or so I read.
Vista once known as 'longhorn' was just a developmental mutant that went out of control and should have been killed and Microdaft know it. But marketing demanded that it be 'finished' and pushed to market.
Some people enjoy endless fiddling about with their computers. Other people want to use the damn things to do things, hear things, watch things, design things and all the rest.
If you want to spend your time doing computer things with your computer get a MS OS - if you want to actually do things with your computer get OSX or Ubuntu (maybe?)
People think it is normal to be regularly downloading patches and running CPU speed killing antivirus software with their own constant updates. What a way to live...
OS X has never been 'perfect' but it is a functioning operating system that under normal use - even pretty heavy abuse, does not need anti-virus software, patches of any sort - or even any kind of maintenance, just solid...
With OS X your main concern is the hardware causing a problem.

you are right, its Ubuntu.

If i installed windoze today, i'll write dvd's at 16* in 5mins. I enjoy this speeds for only 2-3 weeks. After this when writing at the same speed it takes 32mins!!!

I hate that i have to re-install my OS when writing dvd's in bulk.

i know it seems hard to believe but windows 7 aka 'blackcomb'/'Vienna' is due for late 2009/2010, likely there will be delays but their pushing to release a new windows every 3 years now.

Wiki's an interesting read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7 on this one.

gaks - your issue was probably to do with the PIO/DMA settings on your drive in system tools, if theres a read error on a cd windows can flick into PIO mode sometimes and not click back into DMA if this occurs it will give times of around 30 mins dvd burning.

You can change it back manually using settings in 'system' otherwise it is fixable by doing a bunch of registry editing, cant remember the exact commands at the moment but if you google the issue of PIO/DMA you should find an easier solution to reinstalling.

this's exactly same to one of the replies i got, there's a link under the above link to a step by step process i guess.
I tried it but nothing worked. which left me with the question of whether this works with SATA drives. I'll try out using my drive on another machine the next time i burn or an IDE one on mine.

thanks.

You REALLY shouldn't have to do stuff like this with your 'personal' computer.
