Yeah Oras, you are right, I have no idea what is Hi-Fi. I've never heard any good set ups, never sat in a listening room hearing Hi-Fi that cost more than I earn in a year, never been in a recording studio, never owned anything really good, never dreamed about any or drooled over any in a magazine. Or have I? I dunno! I would have to ask Oras, he who knows all...
So tell us, Oh Great Sage, what is Hi-Fi?
But what I can't understand is that although you've never met me and (as far as I know) haven't been at my shoulder for all of my 48 years on this planet, how it is you know so much about me...
It's a bit like you knowing so much about the Vedas which you've never read.
You're quite an incredible person, Oras, aren't you?

Don't use the plural there Ron!
Read the text and you'll find it's singular.
Or do we only ban youthmen who annoy other Mods.
WTF!

On the subject of hi-fi,I am reading an article in HI-FI NEWS at this moment that states " What we regard as hi-fi,then,is roughly 50 years old.....,Stan Kelly writing in The Hi-Fi Yearbook stated that ' 1958 will go down in history as the first year of stereo - at least insofar as pick-ups are concerned ' "
So folks,it looks like I CAN talk about hi-fi then, having listened to it for possibly longer than most of you !!

I always thought that hi-fi was a relic of a previous era.
Before hi-fidelity nobody making and selling equipment ever mentioned their wares as being lo or medium fidelity - so what gives?
It is really a useful term in this day and age?
My annoyingly cold Sony tuner amp can crank out a fairly decent volume and it is a fairly 'honest' sound.
Whereas my way more puny 1966 Fisher (same age as me incidentally) produces a warm and mellow sound - which may not be as true to the sound of the actual vinyl, CD or digital file being played on it - but it sounds better. It is doing something to the sound, rounding off harshness, mellowing peaks - whatever.
What is hi-fi but a marketing ploy some 50 years old?

Hey Trevor
Is it true to say that the sensitivity of the ear deteriorates with age?

Pardon me,could you speak up a bit please !!:D
Yes,certainly,6anbatte ! Usually it is a reduction in the higher mid-band frequencies.I find it a slight problem personally, due to the fact that I work with machinery.I can compensate by turning the system`s volume up a bit more. (tu)
And don`t take the p*ss,or I`ll cry.
