Just listening 'Dread Hot in Africa' by Makasound and one word desrcibing Leroy came to my mind and that is 'convincing'.

I liked him better before he took singing lessons when he was living in New York. His new style did mean an improvement in articulation and use of breathing, but it took away the "JA-ness" in his voice IMO. But he is indeed a true character. What you saw in Rockers is pretty much what you get.

Hello,

@ Dave:
When did this change in singing style came about?
Was it around '86 ?

The Rockers scene where he hangs out with friends at his home shows an extremely 'lively' Leroy, is that what you mean with 'what you see is what you get'?.

Thanks

Bassie

It was 79 or 80, and I believe the first LP after that period was "Too Much Grudgfulness" (Jah Life LP). You can tell his ennunciating is clearer, and he is singing more from his diaphram rather than his throat...it probably made him a "better" singer in the technical sense, but it's the imperfections and indiosynchracies that IMO make people unique. I still like a lot of his 80's output, he cut some nice tunes for Junjo and Jammies. And of course "I Am The Don" with that wicked Style Scott snare smash is stone cold classic.

Thank you!!

IMO not only artists, count Studio´s, imperfect Recordings, bad pressings...

Often i ask myself, who gives the standard of good music, who specify a good song for a good song. You like a song, or dont listen to it. Doesnt matter if its good recorded or not. Reggae is not POP-music....

ps.:i can say who specify the standard for perfect music: its i for i-self!! :)

It's not on this site,but:

Talk Bout Friend lp - 1993 - Digital B

is worth a listen. If, judging by the date and label, you think you wouldn't like it, you probably won't. But if you like Bobby Digital's early 90's productions.... check it out.

The "On Top" LP has a few killer tracks worth it, although I'd say 50 % of the LP has "fillers"...
