I really love Winston Jarrett's cover of "Pyaka" because he changed it up. The first time I heard it, I was about one minute into the song before I realized it was the same.

I probably like a lot of Bob Marley covers but I deliberately keep myself ignorant of the authorship so as not to spoil my enjoyment of the music
I can't deny that he and the Wailers wrote some great songs...just don't like their versions.
I'll go away now...

ites..thats a matter of taste....

most of the time i love their versions..except a few...the I Shot The Sheriff Version could be a bit more relaxed. I think that the Backing Vocals are too shrill. And No Woman No Cry (the studio version) needs getting used to. It sounds to me more like a demo version. But it is good to have that contrast between the live versions later recorded (and released).
But Songs like Rastaman Chant, Soul Rebel and Burnin' & Lootin' are very good. And to me they couldn't be covered better than the original..but like we all know, it is a matter of taste..And I remember i heard awful versions of Marley like
Boney M - No Woman, No Cry
The Fugees - No Woman, No Cry
Joe Cocker - Could You Be Loved
Barrington Levy - Get Up, Stand Up

Familyman, Carlie, Wailers, etc... genius.
I'm the opposite...can't stand Marley songs perform by other people (specially live onstage).
Even supposedly "better" singers cannot do his songs like him.
( Actually I found one I rate...Wailing Soul / Winston Mathew's Sun Is Shining)

There is a Japanese artist,Kurukaya Makoto, who has done some BMW covers.
Some good, some not so good.

for me it is like what for now I will call the Bob Dylan syndrome. I have come across many people sharing my opinion that they cannot stand to listen to Bob Dylan but really enjoy many other artists cover versions of his songs.
I am better off not knowing it is a Dylan cover if i am to even listen to it!
I am convinced that in addition to the personal taste element at work in preference for one sound or another there is the factor of people hearing sound differently. I have no explanation for this phenomenon but offer the illustration of my youthful abhorrence of the Hammond organ sound. I used to really cringe when I heard a Hammond on a record - not that I even knew what the instrument was called.
Love it now of course in thanks particularly to the works of J. Mittoo...
Just thought I would throw this in to the mix on the taste issue.

There's also "Midnight Ravers" by Delroy Washington in the album I-Sus I think, a great version imo.

Two more mentions: "So Much Trouble" by Sugar Minott for Wackies (breaking up riddim) and Sizzla's take on the One Drop riddim "True God"
