Ah, beer. Nectar of the gods. I kind of wish I didn't like it so much. No offense to the Brits (who tend to think they're the best at everything, if my brother in law is anyone to go by) but Belgium and the US west coast are trailblazing some amazing sh*t these days!!!!!!
Belgian IPA? Gueuze? Barrel aged brews? Mercy! (ok, those aren't all actually new, just new to me!)
In a sense though it's getting as crazy as coffee.
One scotch, one bourbon, and one triple wet hopped abbey ale aged in whiskey casks with brettanomyces! When will the delicious madness cease!?

The slogan of Olympia Beer is "It's The Water." At least they're honest.

No offense to Belgium and the US west coast. But you didn't expect a German not to comment on that topic, did you?
At least one thing to be proud of: German brew is second to none! (Though brits might argue, that one can be proud of invading France 2 times in 80years)
If there were not the Chzechs, i'd say best beer in the world - but considering their quality i call it a tie..

When I´m outside Europe I generally abandon on beer. Cause I cant´t deal with most of the stuff. Even Red Stripe tastes like cold water plus alcohol without any flavour.
The German purity law from 1516 regulates the beer quality.
The tastes of German beer are very different. Northern beer is more bitter while southern beer is sweeter with less alcohol.
I like to be on holiday in south Germany in an area called the Bavarian woods. Love to go mountainbiking there. There are also lots of artists for contemporary glass art, galleries, studios. There is also a school for glass art which is attended by international students.
I often visit art galleries there. They are located in different valleys.
And almost every valley has its own brewery. Small enterprises producing different types of beer. Sometimes, the brewery is a part of a monestry. The motto of the monks "ora et labora" contains the tasting of beer traditionally.
A special beer is wheat beer. I prefer the brightest which is called crystal wheat. This is great stuff, full of freshness, wort and flavour. If you order one it will be served in a 0.5 liter glass. Love that on a hot summer day, sittig in the beer garden, yes! It contains low alcohol and so its perfeect for the heat. And...one can have more than one.
Most breweries are small private ones. In difference to the big companies, they dont use chemical additives to stabilize the beer. So its only good through half a year or one year at most.
That more natural beer is 10 times better than the industrial sauce.
So my holidays are full of enjoyments. I always put a crate in my trunk to carry it back home.
Beer is cool during summer time. I can be outside for some sports to burn the calories. Don´t need an extended waist line!
Nuff greetings & Prost!

Can't say I agree at all. I do love German beer, but all the purity act does is set high standards for German style beer. And that's great. However, it is quite limiting and if everyone adhered to it, we couldn't have delicious sour beers like gueuze and lambics. I feel like the Germans have perfected lagers, Brits have perfected ales, but in classic styles. The belgians (and as leggo mentioned dutch and french farmhouse styles) have a freer reign to impart more varied and unusual flavors and subtleties to their beers with wild yeasts and spontaneous fermentation, etc. and they can do this specifically because they do not follow the purity act.

Well, I'm a Scotsman and beer lover and haven't found anything to beat a good English bitter! Fuller's London Pride or Chiswick Bitter or Spitfire... followed by a couple of single malts, Talisker or Old Pulteney...
Back to the top, the lyrics also feature in General Echo's Drunken Master on Taxi.

Just finished a 16 year old Caol Ila Dun Bheagaan. A bit salty and oily. Smells like seaweed. Like it.
