the lyrics to the song Worth His Weight In Gold (aka Rally Round The Flag) from Steel Pulse's True Democracy LP explains the whole color thing and what it stands for, I think the African colors are all based on this. On TV yesterday watching the world cup the announcer explained that Angola's uniform color (red) stood for the blood shed for independance from Portugal, the team that beat them..... as I recal from hearing this song over 20 years ago, it says green for the land, red for the blood, gold for the riches, black for the color of the people or something like this...

Hi guys,
as I remember, in general;
Red=blood, people, African race?
Yellow=sun, everything divine, Jah himself
Green=Africa, land, the earth..
so you got three colors representing the whole creation and its creator..

One crucial difference between the two flags (Ethiopia's and Rasta's) is that on Ethiopian's flag, green is on top, whereas the rasta flag is, in most cases, red (Ites) on top. One interpretation that I've heard is that red, symbolizing blood, is on top at a time of a struggle or a war, ie. the present time to the vast majority of rastas, who live in hardship. At least this was the case before the so-called mid-classification of rastafari.

the steel pulse song talked about go like this;
red for the blood that flow like a river
yellow for the gold that they stole
black for the people they loot it from
green for the land africa
with "marcus say,marcus say" between all the lines, so the colors represent the african struggle

The Ethiopian flag is flown green-gold-red, and is flown this way by many rasta. Sometimes a lion is placed in the center of the flag, which is not offically Ethiopian. Often you will see the flag flown red-gold-green, which is the way Bobo Shanti fly the flag. Interestingly, you can find the red-gold-green colors on many Bob Marley images and I'm pretty sure Bob was not a Bobo Dread (but I don't know if he cared how the flag was flown). Flags are always flown green-gold-red at the Nyabinghi house I visited in Harlem, New York and it is a serious matter.
