Split Stereo it is called, a proces of faking stereo effects on mono recordings, by putting one track on the left and the second on the right.

Mainly done in Jamaica for soundsystem purposes : you can put the left channel through one amp and the right through a next, so you can blast the bass hard through a soundsystem.

plese not the reggae musics is NOT made to hear on headphones, but on a earthshattering soundsytem

bless!

It's a fair point. I don't suppose that they were thinking of some white guy in England kicking back on his sofa with cans on 30+ years later when they were originally mixing the tunes. :D :D :D

That said, there's a lot to be said for listening to reggae (and especially dub) with headphones on and the volume cranked up to max. Just close your eyes, lie back and fly on the music.

@funky punk. that's true, especcially some 'later/80s dubs heve some great stereo effects (paul smykle, scientist etc.)but then, most of 80s dub music was aimed at white guys in England ( and Europe) not aimed at the jamaican dancehall's.

Yes there are a couple of Lee Perry albums that I think were mixed by King Tubby and they have the same problem. its fine when you listen to them through speakers but on headphones its a mare. I 'corrected' both of them as well.

Also I found that the brilliant "In A Rub-A-Dub Style" by Bim Sherman meets Horace Andy And U.Black had a couple of tracks where this was the case I 'corrected' both of them as well.

I also bought an Itals album where a few tunes where like this, haven't sorted them out yet since I don't listen to the album much anyway

Blackboard Jungle Dub could possibly be described as having this "problem" (split stereo). However, this is part of the greatness of the album! Play loud on stereo speakers!!
(I don“t know what other Perry albums you may think of...)

The JA 'Cloak and Dagger' issue has the same 'problem'.
Quite some Studio One albums have been recorded in spilt stereo, like Winston Francis' California Dreaming and his other album Mr Fix It, Horace Andy's Skylarking.
I can't check atm, but I think John Holts 'Love I Can Feel' is another one.
Most songs on 'Big Bamboo Sample'.
