All, check this amazing book:

http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/swissprecision.html

It speaks of the legendary THORENS 124. If you have a large collection of vinyl from 60's ans 70's, what best than to spin it on the cult turntable from the era, which many hi fi junkies consider better sounding than the majority of "modern" tables (you need right tonearm of course)?

I dont know anything about turntables , since 6 years ago i been listening to reggae and dub music, so i decided to start my own collection. My first step is to buy a turntable, i dont have too much money , so i thought to buy a second hand one. A man offer me a -Pioneer Pl 1150- , what do you think about this one? its good? not good? , maybe fine to star, dont know, if you guys can recommend me something i would be very greatefull.

thanks to all , and bless up!!

Welcome to the club! smiling smiley

That Pioneer should be fine to begin with. It's a direct drive (no belt drive mechanism inside - all electronic) and it was first released in 1975, so it's from a similar era to the music I imagine you like. Just don't pay much for it.

The most reliable tables tend to be Technics, but they're not spectacular to listen to. I'd recommend Denon direct drive tables above all others, but there are loads of other great options out there. I use one just like this:

I have recently started collecting vinyls, i currently only have 2 1974 7" and ive got a 1989 12" on the way. Its an exciting time for me!

Im using a Pioneer PL-J210 because thats what my stereo sytem happened to come with when i inherited it. It seems a little flimsy to me, but does the job nicely.

It is belt driven, what are the pro/cons of belt/direct drive?

Also, there is a little slider to control arm height, when i am playing should i have this on fully down or just at the point which the stylus just touches the record? It seems strange to me that they would manufacture it to be lower than necessary so ive had it on fully down so far..

I have a few more "vinyl beginners questions" so i may start a new thread if i cant find another one...

Best thing would be to check back with your local hifi-dealer. He will be able to adjust your deck. It shouldn´t cost too much.

I used to have one of these too - Bang & Olufsen BeoGram 5500, loved the turntable, but I found out just the other day that a replacement stylus is £80!!!!

I wanted to add my latest turntable to the list, though strictly speaking it's not a turntable but a Dansette Tempo, Mono 1961 model, with Garrard deck. It must be pre Micro-groove, because it won't play any 33rpm Lp I've put on it yet!

Very good for 78s and early 45s though. Ska and Rocksteady sound great on it!
