if you dont believe the man, check for these clues:

the orignal cut of better days is credited to: the Carltons, not Carlton & the shoes

This heart of mine lp: on the sleeve a picture of Carlton Manning, and the liner note tell: Backing vocals: C. Manning

the same goes for the stuff he did in for DEB and Fashion

Jumbo, thanks for taking it so well. you live up to your name, you are a big-hearted individual.

Seriously now, Carlton never needed a backing singer, he had the talent to do it all alone. Multitracking must have been made for him. His sound was unique and highly accomplished and it must have been a nightmare to find other singers that could do it his way... so why not do it himself?

I always thought Donald and Lynford Manning were still part of Carlton & the Shoes in later periods, so they were parts of 2 different groups. For example in tunes like "Never Give Your Heart Away", among others, Donald's voice is very recognizable...
