Re: Do You Think Its Fair to Download Illegal MP3

What I find ironic is the fact that at one time there were no copyright laws in Jamaica, sepecially when it came to mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae and such.
The film "The Harder They Come" clearly highlights how individual singers and songwriters are ripped off.
In fact, the Trojan label, to this very day,as we speak is still the owner of countless hundreds of thousands of songs in which the original writers still have not sen one red cent.
Can you say Bunny Wailer and Lee Scratch Perry and their on going spat over the Wailers pre-Island material? OR better yet Matumbi's first demo tapes which were recorded at Trojan.
Many reggae artist of the 70's are still seking compensation for their work and have yet to.
The point is,is it right for a comglomorate to walk away scott free and the masses find a way to share the music then it becomes a moral issue.
And why is it that soon as a producer or an artist dies here comes the reggae large reissues.
Augustus Pablo, Coxsone Dodd, Junjo Lawes, not to mention the horrendous ordeal scientist recently faced when he discovered his Albums on the
Grand THEFT Auto- San Andeas video games.
Oh this could go on forever.
I found music on line in which I desperately attempted to order in music stores to no avail. Because where I live some music stores and their employees absoulutely HATE reggae, and the people who love it. In fact a Major music chain placed the reggae Promotional packet( Studio One Reissues) in the classical section which was far away from the reggae section. At one time the same store were giving away the Trojan Tee Shirts with other Cd purchases without once giving them to those who purchased the Trojan Cd's.
After a while I just gave up trying to order music which would never come and when I went back to check on an order Two months later I'm told that it can't be ordered.
were it not for a bootleg Cassette tape Called
"Roots Uprising" Whichd I purchased at a festival in 1996, I would have never discovered the following:
The Gladiators
Bob Andy
Israel Vibration
Cornell Campbell
Earl 16
The Twinkle Brothers
Leroy smart
Freddie McGregor
Fred Locks
Culture
The Wailing Souls
Big Youth
The Great I-Roy
U-roy
Just to name a few. And it was this tape which led me to buy each and every album of each artist
because I loved the vibes each and every artist brought to that Mix Tape. Were it not for that tape I would not have been exposed to the number of artsit, beyond Bob Marley( respect Due) too numerous to name.
In closing, whoever, carry the vibes forward in whatever fashion has spread the message even further. Why, because Ipurchased so many Cd's because of that tape you could not imagine.
