What I find ironic is the fact that at one time there were no copyright laws in Jamaica, sepecially when it came to mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae and such.
The film "The Harder They Come" clearly highlights how individual singers and songwriters are ripped off.
In fact, the Trojan label, to this very day,as we speak is still the owner of countless hundreds of thousands of songs in which the original writers still have not sen one red cent.
Can you say Bunny Wailer and Lee Scratch Perry and their on going spat over the Wailers pre-Island material? OR better yet Matumbi's first demo tapes which were recorded at Trojan.
Many reggae artist of the 70's are still seking compensation for their work and have yet to.
The point is,is it right for a comglomorate to walk away scott free and the masses find a way to share the music then it becomes a moral issue.
And why is it that soon as a producer or an artist dies here comes the reggae large reissues.
Augustus Pablo, Coxsone Dodd, Junjo Lawes, not to mention the horrendous ordeal scientist recently faced when he discovered his Albums on the
Grand THEFT Auto- San Andeas video games.
Oh this could go on forever.
I found music on line in which I desperately attempted to order in music stores to no avail. Because where I live some music stores and their employees absoulutely HATE reggae, and the people who love it. In fact a Major music chain placed the reggae Promotional packet( Studio One Reissues) in the classical section which was far away from the reggae section. At one time the same store were giving away the Trojan Tee Shirts with other Cd purchases without once giving them to those who purchased the Trojan Cd's.
After a while I just gave up trying to order music which would never come and when I went back to check on an order Two months later I'm told that it can't be ordered.
were it not for a bootleg Cassette tape Called
"Roots Uprising" Whichd I purchased at a festival in 1996, I would have never discovered the following:
The Gladiators
Bob Andy
Israel Vibration
Cornell Campbell
Earl 16
The Twinkle Brothers
Leroy smart
Freddie McGregor
Fred Locks
Culture
The Wailing Souls
Big Youth
The Great I-Roy
U-roy

Just to name a few. And it was this tape which led me to buy each and every album of each artist
because I loved the vibes each and every artist brought to that Mix Tape. Were it not for that tape I would not have been exposed to the number of artsit, beyond Bob Marley( respect Due) too numerous to name.
In closing, whoever, carry the vibes forward in whatever fashion has spread the message even further. Why, because Ipurchased so many Cd's because of that tape you could not imagine.
Big Up To All Blogger Massive.

I would say the majority of people think its ok to steal then, from reading the follow ups.Personally i find it a tragedy that so many think its ok.,Ernie B's is great,Gemm is good,Music Stacks is good,Discoggs is good. You could live in the Siberian desert and have reggae brought right to your tent for a reasonable price. So yes you may not be able to find a handfull of ultra rare stuff but most is available. Most of the popular artists from the old days die in poverty today. You care?

theres two sides to this, i agree its wrong to be stealing, illegal downloading.etc.but when you buy a record that is original or repressed, you are supporting is the seller, distriburator, or store, the artist wich a majority may be dead and the ones that are stll alive dont get anything. thats what sucks about this. you download its stealing, you by a reprssed record, some arist dont get anything.whats the right thing to do? you thnk the artist would care whats happening 20-45 years after they recorded, they did it for the music.thats the most important thing i think, what are we doing for the music? carrying on the message about reggae. nothing will ever be the same anymore, peace. skavoovie!

I think if you download something illegally which is readily available elsewhere, then you are a thief and you are killing the reggae industry- perhaps not the artists or producers, but reggae stores, reggae labels, and online stores. Ernie B's is the best online shop I have ever used, and I'm not only talking about online music stores- ANY online store. They have the best prices, absurdly fast shipping, and phenomenal customer service. There's no excuse to download anything which you could get there, unless (as someone else said) you live in a country where you can't get a real salary. I'm a poor American college student, and even I have found a way to get a collection of 400 legal, original CD's. If you have ANY respect for reggae music, then you will pay for it legally whenever it's possible.

People having the hardware, bandwith, etc... also have the money to order this nice Jamaican pressing from your local store or directly from Jamaica. I hope you will all understand the difference?
- you support your local record shop owner during these "hard" times. When he is noticing reggae sells, he will definitely extend his selection.(forget about these large retailers, don't buy there).
- when you buy a JA pressing you are supporting a 3rd world economy, best you can do...
- you get something of value, an mp3 doesns't have

>>> as a student I recorded many albums on cassette (no money), ... I hope you will understand the difference...

"Do You Think Its Fair to Download Illegal MP3"

MP3's can't be illegal, the distribution may be illegal, but a mp3 can't be.....

And don't forget, In many countries it's legal to download or upload music.
