No i use picks. yeah, to be more specific i do need the better eq's for the the rhythm guitar. I am looking more for the Dennis brown and don carlos sound. A combination of both is what I'm pursuing.

im re-reading the first message: what are chucks? you mean picking or is a type of skank? it doesnt appear in my dictionary....

Yeah, by chucks i definitely mean skanks. Sorry for the mix up.

equipment wise I think you're fine, so its more about getting the right tone out of it through settings on all parts, meaning guitar, amp, pedals, and of course the more important, your hands.
Be carefull to not overwah. The pedal is there, doesnt mean you have to use it in every song....Sometimes, the wah can be also interesting used as an eq, by that I mean leaving it on through the hole song in the same position (find one that you like).
I particularly am not a fan of multi effects units, little digital displays and presets. I just prefer the tones and knobs on separate boxes. I like using a phaser, I could recomend the MXR (dont know others, just because its the one I have and I like it). There are more expensive/better delay units, but the dd7 is fine, specially for a live situation. If you're talking about recording, always get a good clean sound and the person who mix it will think about effecting it.
playing wise, I could only say more listening to your playing...c'mon man, dont be shy, show us your skank/"chuck".

Interesting thread. I am too very interested on the persuit of the perfect skank. I've been playing reggae for about 4 years and I came to find out that the skank is the most important aspect of my overall sound. The effects help but, like someone said before me, it's all on your hands; feel it!

Getting a clean sound is whats harder. I set my high's and mid's on my amp above the low's, but not too much. I play with those nobs and to find what I like best. The WahWah trick works too if you dont trust your amp.

Since no one has posted a video, I'll be the first.
This is me playing with my former band. I first use a clean skank, and then switch to a phaser for the bridge of the song. Opinions and comments are very much appreciated.

P.S: The phaser sound seems too overwhelming; now I play around with the nobs (level, rate, etc) on that pedal as well.

I have met many Reggae musicians from the 70s/80s and I've never ever heard of "skank" refer to the reggae rhythm guitar. Skank is a dance (and also other things!)
Non-english speaking europeans started to call it "skank" recently...frenchies specially. No reggae record from 65-85 calls it that.

I'm old-school: I like the guitar chipping, piano chopping and organ bubbling!

I'm no big fan of pedals or fancy guitars or amps. The musician is the most important part. A good reggae guitarrist will sound brilliant using and old battered guitar connected to a washing-mashine!

skank, chuck, chop, chip. i dont know. they all refer to the same thing, but if we get technical, they all mean different things
