@ting on the opposite i totally understand your point and dont take you seriously.
With your "ironic humor" your saying Reggae is also music made by black people, aimed primarily at black people and often deals with issues of black people .So your analogy would be all white people are eating big macs and looking at exserize video .while listening to reggae.AND no one should take comments like that seriosly.
On the other hand you took this very seriously while i gave you a polite convincing reply as to why your thinking is wrong. So you like to put down people or personal attacks as for your humor. And unfortunately for you you got it back, while you pay for your high speed internet and d/l everything in sight giving out fake ass wannabee im ghetto attitude and your not.But dont take that seriosly its just my ironic humor.
I know you meant to say quit showing off,and to that i agree with you.Irony is as irony does
I despise chat arguements and shall not post here again, apologies to the regulars.

Wow Maple. Is English your second, or even third language? Read my posts and then tell me where I mentioned ANYTHING about ANYBODY'S race. Also, where is my "ghetto" attitude, and where have I claimed to be from the ghetto myself? Do you mean my appropriate use of grammar and punctuation? Yeah, that's real hood G! And just for the record, the only reggae I download is from eMusic, which I pay for.

Leggo Rocker and bullit actually posted some very interesting responses to my post... responses which foster interesting conversation. I'm sorry you can't do the same. Glad to hear you won't post here again.

To Leggo and bullit: You both make a good points. By playing the tunes out, and sharing them with an audience, you are definitely giving back to the community.

When spending that much on music per month, how do you find the time to listen to it all? Getting back to the original reason for the thread, do you ever feel like you are buying stuff just to have it, rather than because you really enjoy the tune? I know a lot of people who think that just because a piece of vinyl is rare, that it automatically makes the music good. [By the way, these are just questions for the purpose of continuing a meaningful conversation. Please don't overreact and take it personally like others have.]

I guess the truth is I buy for two reasons. One to own it, look at it and have the pride of ownership and the feeling I have something rare.

But primarily I buy because I do want to listen to the music and also to play it out to an audience.

For this reason I don't buy stuff I don't like, no matter how collectable it may be. Stuff I buy on spec that turns out not to be to my taste, I usually sell on (unless it completes an artist's or label's 'set').

I am lucky to have the kind of life style where I can actually listen to music - lots of it. So EVRYTHING I buy gets listened to.

I have today played maybe 5 LPs, 5 12 inchers and a slack handful of 7 inchers. Like some people who light up a cigarette when they awake, I fire up the music - everyday, at 6am the music starts - usually Mp3s while in the bathroom! I then have LPs playing while I have my breakfast and continue to play music throughout the day and evening. I don't watch TV.

I am also lucky to have a very understanding wife who likes my music and indulges my reckless spending on it and enjoys hearing the vibe bellowing out throughout the house! My youngest three kids don't understand reggae, yet - although my very youngest daughter can't resist the riddims and dances to them. But my eldest two, grown up, have both enjoyed my reggae.

Lets keep it sensible and hopefully Maple will blow off a bit of steam and return. One of the best parts of this site is that the chat usually stays very friendly and peaceful. And so it should on a roots rock reggae forum!

I agree, we gotta keep things peaceful and friendly here, i love being able to chat and converse with people about reggae.. I hardly know anyone off the net that i can have a really good conversation about reggae tunes.

The way i buy tunes is slightly different to the way Leggo buys his, I go on the internet and look for tunes i like, i only buy something i really want to play.. I'd buy this on a repress or original, the pressing doesnt mean a lot to me as long as its alright to play out.

However take this situation, theres two tunes A & B. I love A and quite like B, but i KNOW many more people i play music to would like B so in that case there is a good chance i would buy B.

However if i had really disliked B i wouldnt of got it, its got to be a kind of mix of my love and the people i love to play music to.

As to your question, I'm 21; I dont have a massive collection of tunes, each one has a memory attached to it and when i play the tune it still holds meaning, having more records just means i have more things to think about..
I wouldnt buy a tune if i didnt like it and i would usually go for the cheaper option if an original and repress in front of me.
Although of course the original would be nice, i would be able to get another maybe if i went for the cheaper. (of course there are tunes that havent been repressed, resulting in a forced original (££) buy)

Its all for peace & Love.

It's great to hear of people aged 'only' 21 being seriously into reggae music.

I started buying reggae again after 20 years making do with old tapes and no records about 24 months ago. At first I got stuff from iTunes. The quality is lousy so I moved to CDs. Then represses and now the original press (JA press if possible) bug has bitten me so hard I reckon I could get treatment at rehab.

I have been buying lots of 12 inch discos recently. I didn't used to bother but I am buying them with playing out in mind as LPs aren't that practical for DJ work. Since buying them I've realised that they are a really good way to buy reggae, you get 'bonus' stuff not easily available elsewhere. I now have enough to do a night-long set exclusively with 12s without things getting too patchy.

I must come and hear you spinning those chunes Bullit. List us some of your gigs!

Well, I have to say that we've got a lot in common bullit, not only because we are on the early 20's (i'm 23) and already love to collect reggae on vinyl, but also because i always tend to buy the cheapest option. That's the reason why 90% of my collection i can surely say it's represses...

I always try to hear the tune or ask someone whos ever heard before i buy... i would NEVER buy a tune or lp that is not my style (ie. ragga-old ska-blue beat) no matter how rare it may be.... As leggo said, i buy them to have this feeling of possessing something that is quite rare, but also to play it and enjoy it, just because it's totally different then hearing them on mp3's, even though i might already have them in this format....

I also get really interested when tunes in older original pressings are mixed in a different way than their newer represses... (quite normal..)

I always try to play the tunes i own to the (few) people who really loves roots music down here, but u can't imagine how hard it is....

I'm not a professional DJ simply because there's no audience to reggae parties here, except for some live concerts, and only by famous and well known artists (90% crap, to my taste...)

The best we can get here is Israel Vibration recording a DVD next week (because they said they "loved the crowd support", and also midnite and groundation (those last 2 i personally don't enjoy...).. those are the only acts that gets sold
out...

Hopefully, things will start to change, as i'm planning to open a online record shop to sell (all those repress on cd's and lp's) all over the country, cause most people here don't buy more records (specially lp's) cause they don't know where to buy (sometimes not even knows how to read in english, that is the main language to the greatest sources...)... or when they know, they get scared by the abusive taxes they charge when importing records as a consumer...

By the way, I LOVE 12" inch vinyls with their exteeeeeeeeended versions.... that's i'm really on to buying (for my collection!)...

Keep the Good Vibes Flowing! ALL THE TIME...

Love & Respect,

Thanks Leggo, i've observed your good words on reggae for a while, I dont always talk too much on here as im not always sure of what input i can give.

I must admit, i never really tried to get reggae via the internet except of course i download the weekly editions of upfront radio and listen to their daily recordings, some of the guys on there play some nice tunes.

Havent bought a CD in a long long time now, if i couldnt play it out i wouldnt buy it.

I know what you mean Leggo about 12" being good for playing out, but again i must admit there are many times when i play out and play straight off the LP, there are some tunes on things like 'Jammy's Sound War' or 'Sound clash' (Tubbys) with tracks like 'die yu die' by michael bitas that im sure arnt released on anything (tho i did hear of a 7" once existing but probabilly ££)

Gotta love 7's though, small and light, even with my 300 box of 7s i still lug around 2 80/100 12" boxes, though theres probabilly as many LPs as 12s in the boxs.

Where are you located Leggo? Would love for you to turn up but i have a feeling i might be a fair way away..

gunosantos, its nice to know there are some other younger guys out there that love reggae like i.
Its true a lotta mine are repress too, i think i have been quite lucky with a lot of things and got a lot of original for really cheap prices, as I also have done some buying and selling of records and found a few original 12's hidden between other records (whahoo!)

I agree, its a must to have heard the tune before or have some input unless under some curcumstances where the artist has only 2 releases ever and you have one.. Its that gamble of getting the other.

I also find it interesting that different releases at different times have different sounds, perhaps only the horns or whatever.. those little things sometimes make a big difference, can be great but can be a real pain when your repress doesnt have something that £30 original does.

Shame to hear you dont have so many reggae lovers around you, I dont know a lot of reggae lovers myself, I used to play monthly in this pub about a year or two back before i got involved in 'Dub The Earth' (Dub, Ska, reggae band) and sometimes only 10 people would come and listen in a night (8-12).

But the memories i have from those few, some people would drive hours just to sit there and smoke a spliff, listen to the tunes. I have this beautiful memory of playing roots one night and all these lovers slow dancing to things like Horace Andy, True Persuaders, Johnny Clarke and whatever.

My main outputs for reggae and playing out are before and after the band, playing before other bands, putting on a few odd nights and many many many parties im asked to play at.

People love these tunes.

I hope your online record shop idea works, i sell some myself but not really reggae, i just pick up loads of crap house/dance music and stick it up on gemm for sale. I occasionly get some reggae and stick that up for sale too but usually i end up liking the tunes i find to sell and they never go :p.

True, gotta love those extended mix's on the 12"'s

Keep the love and peace in your hearts.

I have been banned from using my credit card to purchase. That is the point where my wife draws the line...

Billit:

I am in Lincoln, UK. But I'll travel long distance to hear good tunes and enjoy a good vibe.

I would also accept invites to play at parties or gigs. Just ask me, I won't even ask for payment (unless offered!) - as long as you don't mind an old baldhead spinning the wax at your party that is.

Only safe venues with only good people or proper security though, I will defend my records with my life but I'd rather not have to!
