hi
i would say coxsone dodd and duke reid,as their really to me the foundation, just like motown and stax for the nascent black music of the 60's and 70's;lee perry, king tubby, but most of all harrie mudie, one of the most overlooked but very innovative for cutting and showcasing some nice instrumental albums and innovating by introducing and giving the worth of the strings.jack ruby is also great through his 70's roots productions

Lee Scratch Perry for being so creative and original it surprises me every time.
Junjo (& Scientist & Radics) for making music that is heavy as lead and sweet as sugar at the same time. I prefer him to the rootsier approach of Linval Thompson.
Coxsone Dodd for allowing musicianship and experimentation in his music, for not always going for the commercially appealing.
Mikey Dread has produced some nice music, Dennis Brown also, ...

Unless I've missed it, nobody has mentioned Ms Sonia Pottinger, so I will.

Has no one mentioned Roy Francis and his Phase One sound?!?
I'm also very fond of Junjo and Linval productions.

Leggo, I liked the Mighty Z tunes too, but when I hit the 'buy' link, found it out of stock.
Back on topic, I agree with Ranking Trevor. The early greats like Sir Coxsone are crucial, but there are greats throughout Reggae's long and continuing life.
I'd not heard of Ms. Sonia Pottinger, for example, so I gotta check her work now.
That's another great thing about this site, I learn something new everytime I check-in!
