maybe to have a section of songs (in the genres' pages each one relates to) we cannot precisely define as this or that, but which worked as definers themselves - for example, theo's easy snaping - would be interesting since thinking strictly mathematically cannot lead one far when dealing with cultural history. hope i could make myself clear.

That is a great link. Thanks.

It is not for me to decide what to do here. I am merely working upon instruction from the Moderators. But I am sure they will read all suggestions posted in this thread and act upon any they like the idea of.

Once again, thank you very much for the brilliant posts in this thread. I am certainly taking a lot of educucation here as I attempt to increase my poor knowledge of this complex subject.
While the technical explanations of the difference between Ska, Reggae, Rocksteady etc are important, no, vital - it is the anecdotes, historical notes and stories that I find most interesting as a writer.
This thread just shows how much spirit is here on Roots-Archives. It's a genuine reggae community that I am hugely pleased and proud to be involved with - and I hope it stays that way ... for-i-ver.

Hail
I&I Know of how the Ska slow down!!
One of the skalites were playing one night in the mid-late 60's and an old woman who was skanking to the ska sound, faint and collapse - she have a stroke.
This was time when memebers of the skalites were reliseing the effect of the ska sound.
One of the skatalite members once said dem recall sweating alot during live shows and peer a de fans a tell dem say dem get tired easily from all of the skanking (doin' the SKA!!)
I think it was Lloyd Knibb who mark this as the time dem knew ska sound, cool down and slow down fe de people dem.

Hi Leggo Rocker
I have the liner notes here for you. I'll get them scanned later today. PM me where you want them sent to.
It was "You're No Good" and the quote is from Coxsone.

Fi true, the way Ranking Trevor tells it is the way I heard it back in the '70s. Also heard that "Simmer Down" refers to this, but I have nothing to back that up.

By the way, 1966 was one of the hottest Jamaican summers on record, which ties in with everything said above.
I have just read a number of other interesting factors/theories which I will have to impart later.
