difficult to say
usually its a price/quality issue
the devices you mention dont give any clues about the quality of them so impossible to say its expensive or not

He has not mentioned any brands yet because I'm not ready to buy and won't buy until I'm done doing my research. He assured me I had to spend that much to get anything decent though.
On a related note, can I buy these things online and can you please suggest good things to buy. I have a $500 to $600 budget.

I also looked at some speakers with built-in amps. If I get those, I would only have to buy 2 of them and a turntable - all around $500. But the audio man thinks it's a bad idea, he says those types speakers are expensive to repair.

Im sure it can be done for cheaper than that. I know nothing about hifi equipment, but from what ive seen it sounds like you can easily pay the amounts you quoted if you want good quality (and a lot lot more for "true audiophile" stuff), but you may want to start with some basic kit, then expand over time rather than one big one-off payment.
Speak to a few different people (hi-fi dealers) mentioning other peoples "quotes" and they should be falling over backwards trying to get you the highest quality for lowest money.
Look into second hand things as well.

you could check different brands of speakers amps and turntable on the net for info and compare the specs&prices
im not fond of those active speakers either i prefer an external amp
for $200 for an amp you will have some good choices in the second hand store
i use a palladium 1600 for home which is too much a P400 would do the trick... the 1600 goes second hand already for $200 so much lower for the 400 i guess
i use a technics SL 1210 MK2 for turntable
i consider it one of the better ones
advantages are it doesnt have a belt; has a pitch and has never broken since i have it almost 20 years now
but it comes at a price
numark is not bad for a reasonable price
boxes are also important i used some B&W which are not bad but since some years i have build one myself for less than $400 and contains 2 x 12" drivers in 1 bow
and i also use a pre amp
with all that i dont have to make any other expenses apart for buying records
my advice is to inform you well before buying anything... be sure what you want so you dont have to buy it again and to buy some good&durable

I have decided to get just a turntable and speakers ( (the ones with amps installed in them) for about $450 all together. It makes sense to start this way but I plan to update the system as my collection grows.
