It's always fair to question whether something is truly "as advertised", because people are being asked to pay a premium based on it's limited availability.

But IMO it's not fair to accuse Trojan (or "the Japanese") of shady business practises unless there is some sort of evidence to support these accusations.

White Mice - food clothes and shelter is a very good example. It sold out within 24 hours when it first came out.. never to released again and so on. New copies went for 100 quid on ebay days after...3/4 year later it came out unlimited.

Some other examples that came to memory at the moment are (not Japanese but still ) are prince Alla - spiritual I. Black Redemption 10".. People rushed to the stores for that because it was limited and sold out very quickly.. Later on it came out in unlimited amounts..

The Amy Winehouse Ska EP. People paid 100+ quid for it on ebay at a certain point.Now I can (still) buy it here at my local record shop today.

It's not unreasonable for a run to come out as "limited", and then someone else releases it 3 or 4 years later by someone else.

I was more curious about examples of duplicate numbering, where you say this:

"or they give those records random numbers 1 to 500 multiple times."

I would love to know who has actually done this in the past. Trojan, or did you have examples of other companies?

Congo B., I was joking, am still waiting for my copy. Hope you didn't mind, no harm meant whatsoever. I am personally convinced the series is limited to 500. By reducing supply upfront, and communicating explicitly about it, they probably sell 500 copies @ 20 GBP in 8-12 weeks = 10000 GBP. If not limited, people wait thinking "I have time, let me think". You probably sell 350 in 1 year @ 10 GBP = 3500 GBP. n addition, limited edition will build back the label's "mystic".So, more money, more mystic, faster. Which marketing strategy would you choose?I

I see what you mean about the supply/demand/price releationship. I would have thought there were more than 500 reggae fans out there who would be interested in this though.

FOR THOSE STATESIDE:

Buyer beware. Just got my copy direct from Universal UK, and they use shitty flat mailers with no reinforcement at all. The cover is bent & split. Fortunately the vinyl managed to survive, no thanks to them. For the £20 I let myself expect better.

I'd seriously consider checking in with Ernie B some time this week to see if he is/will be stocking this. You know you'll get faster & safer shipping that way.

It is nice heavy vinyl with the cool disco-era tri-line "Upsetter" label in pink & red.

BTW my copy is numbered 174, tho I don't know why that means anything.

Same happened with mine & I live in the UK. Seems pointless to produce such a quality item and then send them out like this.

Hold on to your copy the 500 pieces are gone.
