In my mind I always though his music resembles "Jazz" in some way.

I think that it also did in Pablo's mind too...

This is a long thread which goes back a few years with good reason - the reggae listening public have a continual fascination with unique artists like Augustus Pablo.

Having said that I have long been a believer in the fact that there are only 2 types of music - music you like and music you don't like.

Personally I think we are very lucky to have the magic of Pablo recorded on wax, but recognise many people may not "get it". On the one hand people say some of his stuff is simplistic and would be easy to repeat - many have tried but none seem to get there.

Just got a copy of "hap ki do" (with dub version) on iron fist 7" - heard it many times before but loving it still, especially with the version!

Notice how you can often determine fake Pablo (e.g. that Keysey/Doctor Pablo stuff on Jamaican Recordings) before you know for certain.

Or how people like Glen Brown and Peter Tosh sometimes attempted to copy Pablo's thing but just ended up sounding crappy. That has to say something.

Yup Glen Brown has some awful melodia stuff, really harsh and tuneless

If you dig deeper into reggae you tend to listen less to the old hero's and appreciate them less then you used to do.

I think Pablo got the most soul/jazz. But also Glen Brown, Joe White, Bobby Kalphat and so on have their classic melodica songs. P Tosh played most of the times a Harmonica and not a Melodica I believe.

That has certainly been true of my experience

No saying that it is correct. The old hero's made some great music. Less rare but sometimes twice so good.
