Were any of you old-timers into reggae in the early 1980's?
Do you recall 'Pass The Dutchie/Kutchie' that happy song by those cute little Jamaican kids?
Or did your subconscious mind block it from your memory to protect you from a lifetime of post-traumatic stress?
It was a reggae-lite-sounding tune based on the "Full Up" riddim and it became a huge international hit in 1982, IIRC. Produced by Gussie Clarke, of all people.
Here in the US, it played constantly, every hour, everywhere, for about 8 months straight. Radio. Clubs. Shopping Malls. EVERYwhere.
Even to this day, whenever I hear 'Full Up' I get the urge to scream and damage things.

Gussie produced "Pass The Koutchie" (Mighty Diamonds), the song the kids based "Dutchie" on (which used the "Full Up" riddim").
I was very pleased to see it happen at the time, as it meant some royalties for some under-appreciated musicians like Jackie Mittoo.
A tad annoying for being over-played, but not as annoying as the top 30 radio announcer in my town who repeatedly predicted that "Men At Work" (the Australian rock band that played reggae even-liter) were the undisputed successors to Bob Marley's "reggae crown". Now THAT was truly annoying!

I love the early 80's Kutchie/Full Up riddim. Lots of killer tunes on that riddim, the DJs,Ike Josie Wales, Chaplin, sister Nancy, went to town on it. Bad riddim, don't let Musical Youth spoil it for you!

Doesn't Early B do a great song about Emporer Haile Selassie I’s visit to JA on that pass the kochie rhythm too? Amazing track as I recall

Well when I was a five year old kid I absolutly loved that song Pass the dutchie. I gotta admit I still kinda like it today. Infact there's a lot of real authentic roots reggae out there that I like way less.
Down under by Men at work, he he he. This song is fun to listen to. And as a reggae lover I still can enjoy these songs way more than any Soul and RnB song. But that's just me though.

The thing with Musical Youth is that they have done lots of great songs. Their first album and the discos that came with it are really worthwhile. Also their debut 7" is a treat. Tough roots.
