johnny rotten plays reggae

Post by Dubbaddikt »

Does anyone know if its possible to hear the radio show which featured John Lydon a.ka.Rotten as featured guest where he got to select some of his favourite music, mostly reggae, might have been on radio Lancashire in the early 80s but not sure..with Steve Barrow interviewing, seems to ring a bell but I could be wrong.

there were many "punk" bands that embraced the reggae even to a point to make some covers: DOA from Canada do Wailing Souls' "War", Stiff Little Fingers did quite a bit of experimenting with reggae rhythms, especially with "Safe as Houses" and Bob Marley's "Johnny Was", of course the Clash, Alternative TV...

IIRC, Jake Burns (SLF singer) didn't actually own the original record and couldn't remember all the words.

Johnny Rotten went to Jamaica along with Don Letts and others to find artists for Island records in the late 70's i think it was, Don filmed much of this trip and you can see many clips of Johnny Rotten standing round looking bored out of his mind in many shots, he was also a bit of a joker while out there from what i remember of the film.
This trip they made to Ja has been well documented in many books on Reggae where they held auditions all week at some hotel in Kingston where the whose who of reggae flocked to the poolside to show off their talents and this apparently became a week long party from what i remember reading about it, i don't think any footage exists from the poolside party tho or the auditions as some of the tapes where lost, but who knows....
