It's when prisoners are chained together and forced to perform physical tasks outside the prison walls- digging holes, breaking rocks etc. It was very popular in the US, mainly in the south, and I believe the practice still exists in some states.

The chosen few song is a cover of a Sam Cook song

Yeah, I believe that in some states, chain gangs can be seen picking up trash along highways.

yep, you can still see that in Florida - kind of a variation of the old chain gang idea when FL and other Southern states had prison camps housing inmates that would do menial roadside work.

in the old days, you might typically have seen prisoners in leg irons working on rural roads while a guard on horseback with a rifle or shotgun kept an eye on them - that was long before i got to FL, it ended sometime in the mid 60's, but there are still work camps today.

the movie "Cool Hand Luke" was set in the FL prison camp system.
