Bogle was one of the first Jamaican national heros, a church deacon protesting unjust treatment of one of his parisioners who was accused of trespassing onto an abandoned plantation in St. Thomas in 1865. at the time, available land for ex-slaves to cultivate was scarce, and there was widespread dissent over the conditions of so called "freed" slaves.
a clash at the courthouse led to rioting by protestors who were allegedly led by Bogle, resulting in 20 or so deaths and the colonial governer attempted to put down the rebellion with heavy-handed troops who in turn killed more than 400 people, many who had nothing to do with the incident. additionally, Bogle and some 350 others were hanged, including a vocally outspoken member of parliament of the Jamaica Assembly who criticized the governer. George William Gordon was brought from Kingston and tried in St. Thomas under martial law. Gordon also became a national hero in the late 1960's.
the handling of the Morant Bay Rebellion by Governer Edward Eyre generated much political debate in England and was a turning point in colonial relations - Jamaica was governed directly from England after the Jamaica Assembly renounced it's charter and disbanded.
