Been noticing a lot of bands blending genres with reggae.

Just checked out this band Straight Up Down for example... would you call this reggae? It's definitely inspired by reggae I feel...

Amazing band from our region! Allmost all of their basslines are reggae influenced!

This thread needs a new title. "Who can post the worst youtube-links that have absolutly nothing to do with reggae, but are called reggae-influenced anyway?" Funny and entertaining links though.

its an interestenig thread although I dont specially like any of the aforementioned links. Maybe I could try to explain why.

I noticed that I usually dont like at all when a group plays a song alternating "reggae" and then changes to other style. I can't understand that unless it's very well done and justified by the song.

I usually don't like either the reggae influenced bass with "rythim guitar" all over (like the first link... with the due respect I found that horrible). I would prefer a pop group with a true reggae bass.

Massive attack has done some fine stuff with reggae material. And by the way I just remembered that Gorillaz use to have Junior lefty Dan (augustus pablo bassist), and although I dont love the band I remember a few good moments looking for Dan in live videos.

and I recently discovered a band that do some reggae blending that I can enjoy. Fat Freddy's Drop, not everything they have its great but I think they do an interesting job.

You mean like when rock bands have a 'reggae break' in a song where the drumming pattern changes and the guitar goes 'chicka chicka chicka' a few times?

Also, as I believe that ska is also within the remit of this forum... bands that fuse pop-punk/skatepunk with ska - they're usually awful, aren't they? No word of a lie, someone who's into that music once insisted to me that 'ska' was shorthand for 'skateboard'.

Yes, that's it. A change like that can destroy any vibes, not made for me! Well, I'm not into punk-rock bands and I don't tend to appreciate their reggae sound at all, although maybe there's an exception out there, don't know.
