Taking a listen to George Faith's "To Be A Lover" on the Trojan *Disco Devils* collection, and was wondering what goes wrong with the second half of the song. Dillinger's toast from "Roots Train" is on top of the rhythm, sounding totally out of place.

Since I don't have the original Jamaican 12" (and can't find it on YouTube), can anyone verify that this is part of the original mix?

I know "To Be A Lover" has more than one mix (single, LP version, extended mix with Lee Perry doing a strange toast near the end), but this weirdo Dillinger version is new to me.

I've wondered that myself Mick & aked the same question, the answer i got is that's apparently how the original 12" was issued, it's like Dillinger is chatting over a different tune? or sumting??

Exactly. It's like Scratch was mixing "To Be A Lover" and "Roots Train" at the same time and forgot to slide the fader down.

It's how Island received the track, it was published that way on the Island 12".

So where is the Arkology mix from? It has neither Perry or Dillinger just George Faith and dub.

The original Dillinger DJ piece is from Black Swan 12". I have a theory that the tapes got somehow mixed up, which has resulted this oddball. On the B-side "Rastaman Shuffle" Dillinger makes similar kind of appearance.

Arkology compilation also uses the exact same 12", but heavily edited. For example "To Be A Lover" is faded out just before Dillinger enters, "Rastaman Shuffle" skips 1 minute length of Dillinger toast (Black Swan 12" is approx. 8 minutes long, different mix than Black Art 12").

surely this is just tape being reused and dilliningers vocals were on one of the tracks from an old song and he just left it there as he thought it was cool or odd.

agree with Congo Bunny, i believe it was a matter of the tape bleeding the "old" vocal on the new track scratch was mixing, due to reusing the tape, which most JA producers did, but perhaps none as much as scratch.
