I'm quite surprised that nobody here has mentioned the return of Studio One compilations on Soul Jazz Records.

IMHO both, "Studio One Sound" and "Studio One Ironsides" are highly enjoyable sets, eclectic as they might be.
Nuff rarities and classics on both.

I just had my copy in the post today. Unfortunately I don't have the energy right now to try and retrieve it from its cardboard packaging.

A quick glance at the tracklist has revealed a number of songs I didn't know along with familiar ones such as Bongo red by the Gladiators.

Of course, I am assuming that this is a compilation of songs released on Coxsone's Ironside label, isn't it. Anyway, maybe I'll manage to get it out tomorrow and can read the liner notes...

I hope this Studio One reissue programme gains full momentum again..

Just checked on Roots Knotty Roots and the only track I can find on this comp that was released on the Iron Side label was "Joe Frazier". Everything else on other Coxsone labels.

i believe there are tonnes of tunes coxsone Dodd never released just lying in the vaults..why can't they release them ???????

Just got Ironsides. This and Studio One Sound are both great on the whole. I kind of wish Soul Jazz had the rights to reissue original lps and singles instead of having to always make comps, but oh well, still happy for the rarities here ( though they are liberally sprinkled with pretty common tunes as well).

I liked it better when the comps were genre specific instead of the vague titles like "sound" and "Ironsides." Sometimes I feel like the track lists don't flow all that well when you've got ska alongside roots or dancehall.

Overall just happy to hear the stuff, though, and I'll continue to buy them as they come out, I'm sure.

Yea their compilation skills leave something to be desired. That's why I like iTunes, I've re chopped all my studio One comps into seperate ones that make more sense. Nothing jars me like going from ska to dancehall

Is any of this stuff "unreleased"? I know I've heard mention that Mr. Dodd had tons of unreleased material, but has any of it ever been issued on any of the Soul Jazz comps?

Some of the records are rare, but are there examples of tracks that had not been pressed before and were completely unknown to S1-Heads?

I don't get the sense that anyone has actually been allowed to go "digging in the Studio One vaults". I guess its more like the folks at Soul Jazz find some rarer singles through collectors and are then licensed to press them into a comp, without any real involvement with the Dodd estate and whatever remains of the physical Studio One catalogue, on master tape or stampers or whatever.

Also, I'm curious if Soul Jazz is really just licensed for comps or if it is just their marketing strategy.

i'll continue to take whatever Soul Jazz have to offer on the Studio One front. They seem to be the last chance for hearing alot of this music.

I did read somewhere that their license restricted them from reissuing original lps and that's why they always do comps. But cant remember where, so could be wrong. I think they've begun repeating tunes as well. I'm pretty certain one of the dubs on Ironsides was also on Studio One Dub 2, for example. Unless its a slightly different mix. There's another example I noticed recently but I've forgotten now
