i wonder why one never hears anything now on people like the old Saxon massive, with levi, sandy, colonel, rusty, henry the operator, tippa and all?they made some marvellous reggae in the early part of the 1980s.Smiley Culture, Asher Senator, Peter King...can anyone recall the latter's hit ME NEAT ME SWEET? ..with lyrics like "me neat me sweet me know fe dweet, me black me hot me know how fe chat, pan the mike , at the attack, come fe kill, any pirate, say whether dem white, say whether dem black, say whether a fool or whether idyat"..what happened to the uk bubblers label?whats asher senator doing now?

Hi Sean
I saw Smiley Culture, Asher Senator and Peter King on the same bill at the Brighton Top Rank in the early 80's and they were all absolutely fantastic.
Particularly Asher.

Actually, I am ashamed to say I only have Papa Levi 'Mi God Mi King' (on a DJ compilation? Not the British MC's one) and something by Smiley Culture on 12". Not even sure what it is. Best I check it out tonight!

i recall when i first encountered a levi disc. it was on vinyl with a blank white label with MI GOD MI KING stamped on one side and peace in the ghetto stamped on the other side..maxi priest was the singer of the latter.

'Mi God Mi King' was an astonishing bit of DJ-ing, completely new style at the time - and possibly not matched since, he could teach some of the modern so-called artists a thing or two, IMO!

'...him inspire me to be a mic chanter.' I bet a lot of people hung up their mics after hearing that track.
So fast.
