Burning Spear Rocking Time Studio One or United?

For years i've had a LP copy of Burning Spear's Rocking Time that Studio One put out. It's a late eighties pressing with slightly fuzzy graphics. The sound....well it's not so stellar. Recently i picked up a lp of Rocking Time issued by United via studio one. I had no idea it even existed until the other day. First the positives: The graphics are crisper, the lp plays with less surface noise, there's less overdubs and rough cut outs. But I as a whole i got to say,the sound is bad and kind of harsh. Is this some horrible effect of simulated stereo? It's not marked as such but i'm thinking this could be the cause. Anyway, I have the Heartbeat Creation Rebel cd as well, so i have the music but still prefer to hear it on the lp, the way i first heard it. Which leads me to believe that maybe the United copy is the one to go.....any insight Spear/Studio One fans?

Studio One often sounded like crap despite what fanboys will chant like a mantra

Add to that the often awful pressing quality and you have a non audiophile product

Studio One could have sounded like Beatles if they'd paid a little attention to sound. Alas, there is only a handful of S1 albums that sound halfway decent and an even smaller one that sounds good to great...

I much prefer Treasure Isle because of that.

Sadly true, and especially annoying because there are indeed some proper sounding S1 records. So they could have done far better, if they only had the senses ...

And so we do miss some musical masterpieces simply because of bad sound quality. What a shame!

The curse of the bad pressing unfortunately applies even more to Studio One pressings than to other labels.

Having said that there are to be found out there decent versions of all Studio One LP's - unfortunately these are often the earliest pressings and the hardest to find.

As far as Rocking Time is concerned, I've managed to pick up 3 copies over the years (1) early studio one JA issue with original mix - sounds great (2) US pressing through Buddah from 1976 - the one with the words "authentic island collectors edition" in the top right hand corner - this also sounds great and (3) a US Studio One pressing (red and yellow label) - a remix with extra keyboard /drums on some tracks ...The US Buddah release shouldn't be too hard to find and is a "true" US pressing
