sad news indeed. if not for "police and thieves" perhaps reggae would not have been as intergrated into punk rock subculture as it is today. i've made a little tribute for JM, you can hear at

Tragic indeed, what a one-of-a-kind voice. I compiled some of my fav Junior Murvin tunes for all to enjoy- it's actually a split tribute with Barry Llewellyn of the Heptones (he passed around this time 2 years ago):

RIP Junior Murvin, only just found out - Police & Thieves is a classic album, great songs n lyrics, great musicianship, great arrangement and production, sums up Black Ark perfectly. And what a voice, though sometimes too much for me to take too much of imho, but nonetheless a distinctive vocalist with no apparent equal (within his vocal style)..will be sadly missed.
In particular I love the mid-80's anti-apartheid track (can't remember the title) which he sung as a duet with I think Watty Burnett, since were in the time of celebrating Mr. Mandela's life.
And how out of touch am I these days in the regae world, I don't even remember hearing of Barry Llewellyn's passing until today, but again another distinctive singer, instantly recognisable and an artist who's been there from foundation, Studio 1 etc.
He wasn't a particular "favourite" of mine but the Heptones as a group always got my attention musicaly.
RIP Barry Heptones and original Junior Soul, resting in the arms of Jah safe and sound................
