Concerning The Viceroys - Ghetto Vibes, everybody knows that this album is not a true Lp from The Viceroys.
For exemple, I know that Jacques Golub from Kingston Connection paid the licence and he is the only owner of Unity from G Nervous.
All over tunes are fakes.
It's impossible to know the real titles and artists.
Considering all the good work you do, do you think that you should honnestly archive this Lp ?
What deontology do you use to consider that an lp must be credited ?
Personally, I don't think that Jamaican Recordings label deserves that we make publicity for them.

I have to agree with Midnite Selekta.

If it is clearly known when a certain release is bogus / fake then it should be identified on this site as such.

It will help us, the record buyers, to know what releases to avoid.

I think it should be listed but a note be made displaying the issues with it, I mean then at least people will KNOW about it, in the end of the day it has been released and has to be archived..

in a general way, licence probs etc ... are not our concern or we would have to delete most of the rhino or culture press catalogues and many others.

the mistitled albums/songs are another issue. there's not much we can do as well. lots of bogus etc ... i still think roots-archives has to list them even if a comment is necessary.

You could delete all Rhino, Lagoon, Culture Press & Jamaican Recordings.
And what about Abraham Label ?
There isn't a lot of fakes label except those ones.
Your database is enough huge like that.
Should be represented real productions & releases.
Your work has a great value caus' you want to archive Reggae Music.
To archive means to be pertinent, I think.
I'm not sure that any song of this Viceroys set is effectively from The Viceroys.
I selled all these bogus Lp caus' they don't represent Jamaican Music.
How to know what we listen if all the titles are mistitled.
It's just my opinion but perhaps could you put all these fogus Lp in a different category.
Mick Sleeper did it in his excellent site "Eternal Thunder".

Even if I clearly understand your point, I think we have a disagreement.

Roots Archives purpose is to list (or achive) LP & CD releases of roots music. It's not our intention to select which release is legal or not. And anyway who could know what is legal or not ?

Blood and Fire will release next month a reissue of Yabby You's Deliver me from my enemies. It has been released by the Yabby You label a few months ago ... What should we do ? Delete one of them from the database ? In anyway it wouldn't be possible to know who has the right or not. There are dozens of similar cases, one comes to my mind ; what about these 2 Burning Spear releases of Studio One songs, one from Heartbeat the other one from Soul Jazz with nearly the same tracklisting released last year ...

This guy called uhuru disciple (I don't know him) claims to have the rights of songs in the Ghetto Vibes album. Is it true ? How could we know ? Are we sure Kingston Records hasn't been paying anyone to release this ? Are we sure they haven't been fooled ?

What I mean is music business in jamaica and its european counterpart has always been a jungle. Noone knows (except lawyers but i'm not even sure of that) who has the right or not to release something. The artists, producers or anyone involved in an album may have been spoiled (this is probably true in many cases) but Roots Archives purpose is not to tell who is right and who is wrong.

I think your point of view is about ethic and it has always been a word unknown from producers, record companies and others ...

More specifically on this so-called Viceroys release ... It's probably (surely even) not the Viceroys singing, producing or doing anything on this album. The only thing Roots Archives can do is to put a comment on this release and say it's not the Viceroys. If we delete it from our database, anyone not used to check forums or other reggae medias would think it's Viceroys before buying it and (too late) listening to it. I think Roots Archives is making its best in this specific issue, warning people it is not a Viceroys release.
