Coloured vinyl, where (and when) did it start?

I've come across some coloured vinyl recently purporting to be from the early 70s. I wondered if this was possible? I remember coloured vinyl in the LATE 70s but not that early. So are these bogus or was reggae actually being released on coloured vinyl that early?

Anyne know for sure?

Hi Leggo Rocker

Annoyingly being old enough to be buying records in the early 70's they sound iffy to me.

I've got Dangerous Dub on blue vinyl which I bought in 1981 (http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1698) and Rockers Vibration (http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1860) which I bought in 1982 and I remember it was still a novelty then.

If coloured vinyl had been around in the early 70's I don't think I would have still been thinking that 10 years later.

I agree, although I did think I had seen coloured vinyl during the punk era - ie: 1976 onward.

Maybe mistaken.

Now I am gonna try to find the record in question so I can list it here for further comment.

Not sure about 1976. Possibly 78/79. I had a triangular, orange "I Married a Monster from Outerspace" single! Check to see when that came out!

Incidentally the first punk single "New Rose" by the Damned was released on October 22, 1976 so any coloured punk vinyl would have been after that.

That would make sense, although I am sure someone out there will have a yellow Donald Duck promo single from the '50s!

Looks like that vinyl is bogus, Leggo Rocker.

There was a coloured vinyl, picture sleeve, picture disc revival with Punk & New Wave records in the 70's but back in the 1940's RCA were putting out 7" on coloured (blue) vinyl!

I thought it was dodgy so I gave it a miss and now I am glad I did, as it obviously an 80s press.

As for New Rose and the historical claim that it was the first Punk release. I had the single and the LP! Seriously great stuff which I still listen to today (sadly, I don't have the vinyl anymore so have to make do with a CD)

Did you know Captain Sensible has launched a political party in the UK called the Sensible Party (Monty Python)? Sensible politics? Now there's a thought...

And as for John Cooper Clarke's brilliant single 'Gimmix' b/w I married a monster.. it is dated 1978 - record number S-EPC-12-7009. I know, because I have it here, on Star Trek badge shaped orange vinyl in MINT condition!

I saw John Cooper Clark several times supporting various punk acts, he was a class act. Wonder where he is today?

i was thinking about this only yesterday, i've never seen any reggae picture discs, so when did these come about and are there any reggae ones?
