SHOWCASE ??

Ites...
whats your definition of a SHOWCASE album?
I always thought it was an album with the vocals on one side and the dubs on flip...
But it seems that albums with 2 artists, one side each, are called SHOWCASE too...
And talking about the recently focused 12 TRIBES SHOWCASE, it appear to be no more than a compilation...
so?

To me SHOWCASE always meant that the album has the tracks followed by theirs dubs, either in a different track, or in the same track as an "extended" version...
i.e.
BLACK UHURU - Showcase
HORACE ANDY - Dancehall Style (Wackies)
HIGH PRIEST - Make Up Your Mind
WAYNE JARRETT - Bubble Up
Though there's some albums with the name SHOWCASE that are not in this music/version style, i still believe this is the correct definition to a SHOWCASE album...
Unless someone else prove me wrong...
Blessings,

I agree 100% with Gunosantos on this one.
And also with Lion!
With Gunosantos because I agree that the 'genre' Showcase refers to an LP made of what is basically 12 inch 45rpm cuts. Be they vocal plus dub, or DJ plus dub or even all three. And all the albums he list faithfully follow the format.
With Lion because I think he is right that are LPs with showcase in their title but not in their style.
I haven't pulled it out and played it to check - but I can't remember Jackie Mitoo's Showcase LP having vocals and thus a proper Showcase style om any tracks, for instance.

Best Of..
Usually means: The best we could afford the licence for
or: all the tracks we own
or: all the tracks we stole

Showcase : to present an artist.
"now showcasing little john at skateland"
But I tend to agree that I was under the impression it was to "showcase" some of thier material (45s).

I still say Showcase in reggae terms means Vocal + Dub, or DJ + Dub or all three. And there are just too many Lps with Showcase titles that follow this system to deny that. I won't list them, you know what they are.
But of course it can also be used, and was/is to mean showcasing a talent or material - in the 'proper' or usual English meaning of the word.
